    a rethink

Posted on Mar 15, 2010 at 8:31 AM

to be honest, i am not really digging the site, the images of her work at very good and you have successfully given them centre-stage.

My main worry is that having looked at the site i dont know that she is freelance and for hire... there is a contact me section but even as simple as calling it 'hire me' could make the purpose of the site more evident.

I dont like the contact form pushing the page down, if you still want to have a modal-style box for the form then how about a box with slight transparent as an overlay on the main site.

Also i dont link the link styling, navigation and dont understand the use of music? use of music in this type of site brings in back to the days of flash intros....

So my advice would be to reassess the purpose of the site and ask yourself at all times can a total stranger see what the site is about within a few seconds of being on the site..

Post your revisions and I will keep an eye out for them

Thanks for the feedback. I thought the project was too easy :) As for as the links & navigation, what bothers you about them? And as far as the music goes, no matter how much you try to educate and give resistance, sometimes the client just wants what they want...

    More detail!

You always got me with simplicity and nice and colourful pictures but you have to add a little more detail. Maybe some texture or borders. The purpose is awesome but there has to be more love for the details :)

    images bigger

I think you've got the right concept, but just need a little work on the execution.

I would suggest a "Services" section. I think it's more to the point than a "about".

The images could be even bigger given how little content there is. I would give it a wider aspect ratio, perhaps a golden rectangle. I would prefer a gallery/thumbnail option. I understand if that's out of scope though.

I think she needs at least a sentence on the home page explaining herself.

The alignment of the menu seems odd to me. It would be nice to see it relate to the content rather than have it's own independent relationship to the browser window. For example, you could align the menu top to the top of the image and give the menu a left margin equal to the logo top-margin.

I think you hit it right on with the link location and the image sizes. I updated the site and added a gallery link (previously it would take you to the gallery if you clicked on the slider). Thanks for the input!

Much better. I think you could go even a bit larger with the image sizes: maybe another 100px wider.

The background image is also an improvement. If you have the time I would continue working on subtle touches like that.

    more elaboration

i like when designs are simple and to the poin, but here i think you need to add something more like a gradint background because the way it is isn't really atractive.

    A little unfinished

Posted on Mar 16, 2010 at 11:58 AM

This doesn't look bad but feels a little unfinished. Try adding some gradients, strokes and textures into the mix. Keep them subtle with image in the foreground but you need something to help this site feel more finished. Also, it load very slowly, loading each script separately. Makes me think something is wrong with the site.

Thanks for all of the input, everyone! After speaking with the client and showing her some of the revisions, she wasn't pleased with very many of them, unfortunately. But I will use some of the knowledge gained here on future projects!
