David,
You say that you want "to make the viewer think about the design process, and to get them to think about how design affects their everyday life," but the only thing I think of is the lack of design in this poster.
It seems as though the elements used in this piece are arbitrary, which is the opposite of design. This could be an interesting way to take this poster if you want to communicate the importance of design by depicting the very lack of it.
Think about the typography, how could you manipulate it, arrange it, hide it, cut it, stack it, etc., in a smart way to communicate your message. If this poster is going to be about design, you must design every aspect of it. Establish a concrete message that you would like to communicate, and then grab a pencil and start brainstorming ways that you can visually depict that message.
**Don't forget to consider your negative space, and you don't want to have anything floating.
I think you should just put "it" on the same line as "is how." Try making each word have a different pattern instead of just different colors. This will add a whole new feel to the design. Also, I think the black is too harsh for the background, even a flat dark blue would look better.
Sorry man, but I agree Maxim on this one. 1. this is not design, for a start the typography is all the same. 2. what's with the random stripey design in behind the text, it's awful and it hurts my eyes... 3. the sentence is like an answer but there is no question so, it doesn't make any sense.
I would suggest starting again, maybe search design poster in www.flickr.com and see what it returns, good luck!
I agree that it is definitely lacking something - I just need some inspiration, thanks for the tip on flickr! However, I would argue against your point that it does not make sense. It is taken from a quote made by CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs. Here is the full quote: "People think it's this veneer -- that the designers are handed this box and told, 'Make it look good!' That's not what we think design is. It's not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works." Just because how is in a sentence doesn't necessarily turn it into a question.
Does anyone know any really great examples of what you think I am trying to achieve?
have a look at www.bittbox.com and search for posters, other than that, just do a google image search for "design is+ poster"... I get what you are trying to achieve, but have some design in the the actual poster!
