    lighten up your graph colors

Posted on Mar 02, 2010 at 1:33 PM

overall i think this design is pretty nice. i think your colors are maybe a little too loud. maybe you could just make the edges of the screen a little less green and it might calm things down a bit. if this is for the parents, i think they will want to be calm.. and not alarmed with this idea. your colors are a little alarming. but i do like them. the graphs you have there, maybe make them more pastel or gray instead of super green and blue. i think the dollar sign in the s of "Parent$" is a little cliche but.. it seems like you're past the point of editing the logo. the site is well on its way to completion. all the little details are working together pretty well. after visiting the preview of the live site, i would suggest loosing the pink underlines in the heading, and making some things smaller... good job tho, keep going~

Your background color comments have been echoed repeatedly and we will definitely be making changes there. Thank you for your feedback!

This is not a bad design, but it's very web2.0 style, and is sort of cliche (the gloss buttons, blue and green text with a heavy white stroke). If it's targeted at parents, I don't think they'll really notice. If it's targeted at teens, you should rethink the style - teens are VERY design savvy these days.

The overall design and layout is pretty solid in my opnion. There's a few bones I have to pick though:

    1. The biggest issue I see is your main content window with the clouds in the background. The clouds are fine. But the content itself is just overpowered by the background, partly because of how strong the background is, and partly because of how weak that call to action is. Here's a few suggestions: -try making the background reduced in opacity over white, and give it a white inner vignette (just use like a 50 - 100 px inner glow) -make the credit card bigger -give the tagline more prominence -for all that is sacred ADD A CALL TO ACTION BUTTON; you NEED a CTA button in that window. Make sure it's plenty big, and attractive. See this article from Smashing Magazine for some really great inspiration: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/10/13/call-to-action-buttons-examples-and-best-practices/

    2. Your background texture reminds me of tire tread or a dodge ball. Not terrible, but you could rethink that.

    3. I like how you've separated your three primary features area. You might build on that a little and add some simple descriptive sentences under them. Also give them more top and bottom padding for breathing room. You want visitors to really pause and consider those elements of your page. White space will help there.

    4. I like your cost charges table. It's nicely done, but you could fine tune it a little bit. See this article for inspiration on that: http://abduzeedo.com/web-design-pricing-tables

    5. I would center align that credit card image with the button below it that says "get prepaid card"

    6. I like your subpages. Although it seemed like when I clicked "home" from different subpages it took me to a different homepage, which was a little confusing. I really like the teens version of the site.

This is amazingly useful feedback. Thank you for taking the time and providing such a detailed and thoughtful response. We hear you loud and clear about adding more impactful Calls-To-Action! Also, re-thinking the header images. Thanks again!

    The Compare field

Posted on Mar 09, 2010 at 11:36 AM

I would redesign the Compare section quite a bit. I think it stands out to much now, and it doesn't really fits into the flow of the page.

Also hear that loud and clear. We'll have a new, more subtle design on that shortly...

    different picture for FAQ

Posted on Mar 02, 2010 at 6:36 PM

This is looking pretty good. I think the content is laid out well and the large elements make it easy for the parents to navigate and learn. The colors work, but to be picky, they are the standard healthcare colors. I like the abstract background image in the main graphic section. However, you should add a different picture for the FAQ section so it looks different than the What is section. Also, I'd change the active and hover states of the nav - they are very basic and not very pleasing. Since you already separate the nav from the image with the green bar, why don't you remove the blue background and turn the nav items into tabs? Parents should be pretty familiar with this type of navigation. In addition, I'd scale down the font size for the FAQ text. Why does the news page look so different from the rest of the site?

thank you for your feedback. Your suggestions are very good. The reason the news looks so different is that it runs on WordPress. We will make it looks identical to the rest of the site, but we don't want to put any more effort into it until we have the main site design locked down. Thanks again!

need to finetune some alignment issues

Posted on Mar 03, 2010 at 6:23 AM

    1. Main Navigation Bar spacing is too high, pls reduce

    2. In footer are certification icons are not aligned parallel with footer links also the copyright information is not aligned left

    3. Try to split 3 tick columns equally

    Great start

Posted on Mar 03, 2010 at 7:52 AM

I like what you have done with this so far, looks really good. Here are some suggestions though:

    1. Make the credit card in the header bigger and possibly poking out of the header image a little more.
    2. Put a subtle drop shadow on your header text and justify it right.
    3. Make the three check marks more prominent. Consider making them more part of the header image.
    4. Bring the navigation visibility up.

    Background

Posted on Mar 03, 2010 at 2:11 PM

The green textured background is a little out-there for me and a little bright. People tend to enjoy soft and pleasing colors which green isn't one of them (especially for the main background). Try giving it a lighter shade of green or blue

make call to action buttons more prominent.

Posted on Mar 03, 2010 at 10:20 PM

One of the most important thing about a site like this is to get people to sign up and quick. That's why I think you should make your call to action buttons larger and more prominent on the page.

Above "The BillMyParents MasterCard Features" section, I suggest two large buttons side by side. One should be "Sign Up Now", the other "Learn More"

Overall a nice look to the site though. It does look professional.

    The image of the sun

Posted on Mar 04, 2010 at 2:09 PM

Just seems like the sky image is being used because it matches the color scheme of the snowboading. Considering this is a way to monitor spending and then the images symbolizes "the sky's the limit" - I think you want to reconsider.

We had never considered the connotation of clouds on the parent's side. Thanks for the insight!

    Action button in the image

Posted on Mar 10, 2010 at 2:52 AM

Looks great. but green Background really looks bad. Credit card may be bigger in the main image. FAQ and Login button on top bar may be more different.

    Looks good

Posted on Mar 18, 2010 at 2:43 PM

It works! The front page tells the story in a very straight forward way. One thing I am thinking is, should you use people on the front page - clouds really tell nothing and are overused as a background. But overall, as thinking about presenting information you have done a really good site, nice to see stuff like this.
