I like the idea to use a big header to blow away your visitor. But this one is a bit too heavy. i'd rather see great visuals of your work, instead of the (absolutely great - on it's own) visual now.

    Load Time

Posted on May 09, 2011 at 8:07 PM

The "my work" areas are really eye-catching and great. That said, the first page was loading and loading forever. I think you should look at how a simpler, lighter design would affect your bounce rate, as I don't think a lot of people have the patience anymore for long load times. Also the sub menu "Design Development Artwork" is a bit easy to miss.

    Nice Design !

Love the underwater effect on home page! and like the way you have done the WORK page, nice stuff there. every thing looks cool except the overlapping 3 boxes (Learn & Share, lead, etc.). and i think too many type faces are used, what about limit them to two or 3 max. :) like those sites in your portfolio too, some neat work there.

I like the persistence of the footer materials and the presence of light radiating from the top of the page, then down into the photo on the front page.

Good contrast, and use of color.

I like the design. It is very attractive. This light from the sky captures attantion so that one does not go away. Then it is clear and simple what to do here in this site. The only thing that i doubt is the black background a lttlle bit dark impression.

    Contact picture

Posted on Jul 01, 2011 at 10:46 AM

First thing that really stood out on a first glance was when I hit the contact page and seen the text "Thanks for visiting" which doesn't seem to marry up well with your photo. The text says Thanks but the Picture suggests disconnect and impersonality. Perhaps have a more upbeat image here, and play around with ones where you are looking at the camera (user) to reinforce that personal thanks that you are looking to offer.

Aside from that, just want to check that you would have alternatives to the flash content on the site, in the interest of cross-compatibility.

    Rest looks good though! :)

I'd make this design reflect who you are...

Posted on Dec 30, 2011 at 2:48 PM

Right now it seems like a design I've seen done over and over. While it's nice, and you definitely have skill, I'd like to see you explore the elements on the page. Try to rework the design through sketching (maybe two to three iterations). Do some research, look at other types of design outside of web and see what you come up with.

Don't forget about your vertical screen real estate, some of your elements are way to big. I'd love to see you be more original ,you have a some awesome stuff.

Great design, and l love the background! I feel a little disconnected from the menu though.

The colours seem a bit off, better to stick with black/grey/white. Also, it's too bare-bones for my taste.

    very modern and beautiful layout.

asking me if i'd change one thing what would it be...hmmmm

I'd say the box. make the design run horizontal all the way to the edges. If you look at this on a very large landscape monitor it will take away from the square design shape big time. a 24" monitor goes for $150 these days so everyone, and their grandma, have one.

I can only base my review off your screenshots for the link rethinkingcode.com does not work. This is definitely something I would suggest you fix. See attached screenshot, for this is what I see when I visit your site.

Overall, the site looks clean and well thought out. The site flows well and the colours, graphics and fonts seem to work really well with eachother. Great site, job well done!

    This is A+ Work

Posted on Apr 19, 2012 at 9:32 PM

This is just great stuff. I tried to visit the URL, however, and got a spammy site. My main concern was whether you were using web fonts for your copy ("Learn & Share", "welcoem to the…" etc) . I'm worried about search engines not picking up some keywords like "portfolio" or even "Thomas Tate" in case someone google's you.

Small niggles. The "My Work" web site inset (with the white background) doesn't look quite right. I top and bottom gray shading doesn't seem right and the drop shadow on the button seams off. Maybe the light source isn't clear. I know that's not too helpful, but hopefully you'll just take a second look.

    Best of luck!

Love the site, more variety in some areas

Posted on May 21, 2012 at 10:45 AM

I think the site and navigation is really creative and engaging. I agree with what a few others said and that is the photo of yourself repeated on 2 and 4 is a little redundant. There has to be another image you can use on one of them.

I really like that you have the easy navigation at the top, and the extra navigation at the bottom is a great idea, but does get a bit redundant for me at times. Just be careful, because it can distract a bit from the top of the page at times. I keep wanting to go down there to see if anything is different from the other pages.

Other than that, I love it.

maybe the fonts used in the animation

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 at 4:05 AM

I really like the overall concept. I'm a lot into the wood background.. very pretty.

The "rolling" hover state on facebook and twitter seems a little confusing at first, so i guess that is one thing that i personally would change to maybe slowly fading in some color with jquery.

There is nothing wrong with the fonts in the animation.. i personally would use a little more exciting fonts, though :-)

    Overall.. very good job!

    Too static

Posted on Sep 07, 2011 at 1:06 PM

It looks like it is only one layout, with different flash files in the banner section. Looks too static, i think it needs a different content in each page, more rhythm!

I would avoid the use of flash.

Nice navigation hover effect. Nice Background image.

The landing page is epic. Very engaging site. It's a good combination of showing your website design skills to potential clients while still making it personal and paired with the appropriate content. By the way, I didn't have a problem with load time, mine was fine, very fast. Normally I don't like a lot of flash but this is fun.

Stunning actually! The website managed to instantly engage me, wanting to know more.

One thing: The "Welcome to the online portfolio..." could be a bit more, hmm, I don't know: punchy? Not sure how I'd go about it though. I understand you're reasoning to keep it all lower-case. Like the font as well. Hmm. Perhaps spread over 2 lines? I'm not sure.

Some really minor things (small layout stuff):

Learn & share | Lead & Follow | Point & Shoot. --> Learn & share feels to small left-margin to me. Perhaps aligning the background of Learn & share with 'showcase of 53..' instead of how it is now, would do the job. Similarly for the others.

I feel the line-height of the body teaser-text "package designing is useful" is a bit to big. Is it 20 px now? try reducing it to 18. To me, the same line-height for the teaser-title and teaser-body come across as a bit uninteresting in this case.

    Otherwise, really good job!

navigation out of flash and block titles visuals

Posted on Mar 01, 2010 at 5:59 PM

This is wonderful, I love the treatment on the head, very very fun. I personally didn't care on the load time and I am on a decent connection 6Mb connection.

Aside from the fact I get bothered by Flash navigation, I think all that looks wonderful.

The titles for the blocks below seem to get lost in my vision. Perhaps I am just going blind but it was somewhat hard to see the tiles.

Really really enjoyed how you handled your portfolio, very enjoyable.

    Overall, wonderful design!

thanks for the feedback, i would love to remove the loading from this site, but i dont see how its possible to achieve video and text animations without flash, i guess its time to look into some html5 for solutions if they are there. thanks for the feedback.

thanks mark. I used photoshop for the mockup and cutup, flash and jquery for top nav using external interface to connect the 2. I built the site within the codeigniter framework with the simple pie plugin for rss feeds at the bottom and used some xml files as my data source for populating the flash and work section. i used netbeans ide as my primary program for the build. hope this helps, thanks for the feedback.

I really like the design you have here. The first one is a great concept, but I think the imagery could be better. I am not a big fan of any of the images that you have used. You need a really gripping image. Also, I wouldn't overlap the image with the headings. Move them down under the image. Other than that, great work!

    love your rollovers sm'more

Posted on Mar 02, 2010 at 10:09 AM

the header green box that follows the mouseover... i think you can come up with something lovelier... maybe light shining up from below? the underwater video is beautiful.. and the stylization of your name on the top left is great. maybe use that box outline for the rollovers or visited page indicators? the footer needs rollovers too i think, maybe just a pretty green glow? your about picture might be a little too elasticy on its entrance.. overall, i really love this, it looks great. i like how the letters float around in the water as well. dont forget to do something cool with your favicon too~

    Number of fonts

Posted on Mar 04, 2010 at 1:17 PM

It feels like you have too many fonts and themes here. Lead and follow, welcome to the online portfolio, and Wanna network dont seem to have any connection...

    • Thomas Tate
      Thomas Tate commented:
Posted: on Mar 04, 2010 at 1:36 PM

Welcome to the online portfolio is the main section and should be visually separate. Lead and follow are a play on leading and following discussions, its a subhead to the section therefore seperate. The handwriting font is me creating a more personal dialog with my audience and therefore seperate.

I disagree only because different fonts have different feelings, they should be used sparingly but to have 3 fonts within a visual hierarchy especially when trying to portray personality i think is O.K. It becomes more of a complement to the spacing.

I think if this was a more minimalistic design i would definitely agree with you.

      thanks for the feedback.

    Easy Peasy

Posted on Mar 30, 2011 at 1:55 PM

Wow... this is probably the most simple review I would have to do. It's pretty much peach perfect already. In short, it's good to go mate!

I especially love the dual word segmentation, of Learn & Share, Lead & Follow, Point & Shoot... with the latter reminding me of my point and shoot camera... oh they're just so convenient to use over those fussy DSLRs.

I love how the site loads fast as well despite it's engaging flash elements. It just blends well overall. Easy on the eyes and easy to use. Well done Tate!
