the message is important I would suggest adding more white in the bottom and increase the saws a bit too
I love this, i laughed out loud when I saw it, very clever.
I'm not a magazine ad expert, so maybe your ad is perfect. But if i could do one thing to it, draw more attention to the tag line and product, so readers are almost guaranteed to read read the tag line and see the product instead of just the huge tree.
Now bad. but a better photo will be better
I agree with some of the comments above. I love the concept and tagline, but the image could be better. It seems to take over the whole ad. Maybe add some more space at the bottom as others have mentioned. At first glance it seems like an environmental piece or conservation ad. All in all though it's very creative and I think with a little tweaking to that image, it will be really nice.

my first thought is "Oh how nice, a tree.". "Its a beautiful tree."
Scroll down "WTF!? its an advert for a saw!! I must be reading this wrong."
My final thoughs "Yeah ok, saws are for cutting wood, but damn... cant you show a picture of some lumber. Your evil. :)"
The advert certainly provokes a response.
Thanks for the feedback, Michael. This ad published in tree care magazines and catalogs, and was aimed straight at tree care workers, who understand the industry. I should have included these understandings in the original description of the ad, because obviously people outside the tree care industry has misconceptions.
Most notably, the misconception that tree care professionals are the same thing as lumberjacks. Our customers, and the target of our advertising, are arborists. Men and women educated and trained to care for trees, and keep them healthy. One of the ways to keep trees healthy, is regular pruning. That is what the saws we sell are for.
The tree in the ad looks beautiful, because it had just been pruned.
Thanks for the feedback!
Hi Sean,
I caught the jist of that once i had posted my review and saw what the others were saying. It certainly didn't occur to me at first. but like you say if it was in a tree pruning magazine the context would be different.
From such a dry context as this to make people like me understand a before / after would have cleared that up. 1 pic half shaggy bush other half cleaned tree.
Either way though the ad made an impact.
Very creative tag line. Definitely a keeper.
Hi Sean,
You have to work with you have I guess :) My only comment is relating to the photo,
Here's a 50/50 split with those changes (including faux grad on the sky), hope this helps :)
Nice work though, not always easy with those clients :D
Cheers
Thanks Noel. Compared to the original photo, it was already much more colorful. I'm glad you pointed out that it still needed a little more, as I wasn't seeing it.
This has a bit too much of a negative connotation. You have a beautiful tree and then you have a saw below and talking about sawing down the tree. I know you are more talking about trimming the tree but I view this more as cutting the tree down. Your last add worked better because it was black and white and not the nicest of trees. Does that make sense?
Hey Nate. Thanks for the feedback. I don't think our customers would read into the ad the same way you did. They'll see this photo, and they'll know two things right away: 1. This tree was recently and properly pruned 2. It was a beast of a job
I don't think our customers will read into "conquered" as a removal of the tree. Our company and our customers share a passion for trees, and strive to keep them healthy.
Also, this ad is only running in our 2010 catalog, so it's likely that no one except for tree people ever see it.
You do raise a good point though, that I'll keep in mind when we market to the non-professional/homeowner segment.
Thanks!
Showing only the top of the three, and not the root would lessen the idea of cutting down the three
Interesting comment, I saw the previous shot more as a tree/lifeform than a bunch of branches (so we have an opposite view there). I think for me it was the lens flare and semi artistic shot of the previous photo (i.e. backlighting & strong contrast), whilst this one is very nine to five (and thus less "emotional" to me).
I disagree with Nate. I know nothing about Trees, but I see a beautiful Tree, well pruned, in a lovely looking neighbourhood. There's absolutely no connotations of the Tree being cut down.
I like it, great work. The tag line is brilliant.
