    Header

Posted on Feb 25, 2010 at 8:00 AM

I think this design works well for the purposes. However, the header is just really not working for me. There are too many tabs going up and down, too many icons, just a very busy header. I would try to make it more simple and elegant.

I'd like to see a search menu for "select a city" with an auto-hint drop-down list.

Also make certain that a session variable is set up so that the individual user will have a default city when coming back to the site.

The idea has been tried before MANY times (even with Google and Yahoo being competitors). Would like to see this work.

Yes, good observation regarding the default city. We will work on this...

    Impressive first version...

The execution and layout are very well put together - the logo is flawless and portable to any type of 'media' It feels, and looks like the target audience would expect...

+1 on Michael's comment above...this is a must. Also maybe show - Current city, and Most traveled to cities for ease of access.

A few things to consider 1) Don't reload the whole page on each menu click 2) Get a"Become a Local Expert" link on the homepage....this will drive a lot of traffic. How is this managed? How does one prove they have the knowledge? Can people rate them? Might be cool to have a "King of the jungle" feel that the best rated person earns the "Local Legend" status and then people follow. These are more questions on behavior though - I really enjoy the design and layout. Really nice work.

City Insiders apply through the site, and their application is sent to the team. We are then presenting the details to them (what they get in return, time commitment etc) and interview them (usually through video conference).

    Hey there Tobias,

Overall it's a nice piece of work, here's my 2 cents:

1.The fonts used clash on each other in several parts of the sites. I would cut back on those. Especially the font of the login box. 2. The header is to crowded. I'm sure you can find a more simple and elegant way for e.g. city selection. 3. There is no hover implementation for main buttons. This is probably bad for many reasons. It should be easy to fix. 4. There is way to much text on the first page without offering a clear idea of what the site is about. Try to be more explicit using short descriptions and visual elements. 5. The city listing is just a big list, with no categories no filters. The most annoying thing is the know anyone link that opens your mail client. People should know what they're clicking on. Surprises are bad for customers.
    6. Provide the user with a clear message that viewing content requires an account.

    Cheers, Z.

    icons

Posted on Feb 25, 2010 at 12:24 PM

I would change the icons (especially the photos) to something smaller and clearer, maybe someone should design a nice set of icons for this one? Something simple that would correspond with color scheme of the website.

Thanks! Definitely interested in getting professional icons done for the site -- any recommendations?

I like the site. Maybe you could reduce the size of the icons. The position of "Select City" button is strange and do not fit in this place.

First Great Logo! I can see you took a lot of time with the concept of this layout. Second you might want to extend that gradient a little bit more but not to much

    What a great idea!

Posted on Mar 02, 2010 at 10:10 AM

I agree with the other comments one the icons. Your logo is so amazing and I feel like it's being over powered by the icons for the buttons. What if they were just simple silhouettes (maybe like your HERE'S THE LOW DOWN page?). I also think select a city is competing too much with the logo.

I also feel it is important to use real people pictures for this site as it's about the "real" night life... but that's a personal opinion.

Great work can't wait to see this completed, makes me want to be a city insider!

It looks really good, only thing is the menu. It looks like it is a section of the lower part of the page.
