    Navigation Hover

Posted on Feb 22, 2010 at 9:59 AM

Wow this design is just so fabulous and very resolved.

There are a few things in usability that I would tweak.

Navigation - When you hover over the word and the fabric piece shows up I think you should make that whole area clickable (and change the text colour on hover) because it takes an extra step to actually click the word.

Main Photo Slider - Clean up the left edge of that arrow. It looks pixelated and the white stands out too much.

Visit the Cure Store - I would add a colourized hover on that to make it more exciting and match the theme of other elements changing on hover.

    Nice work!!

You brought up a good point about the tabs - I actually have my anchor element for #nav li.mainNavItem a:link set to "display:block", and a matching height and width defined, so I'm not sure why the whole tab is not clickable. Any suggestions?

nm - I found the culprit on that. A style for the subnav with !important telling it to display:inline.

Much better. But there's a big issue I didn't see before. I didn't realize I had to click on that arrow to see a drop down menu. The first time I hovered on the button I assumed that it was just decoration.

If other people don't realize it, no one will be using your drop down selections. I would rethink that arrangement. Perhaps make it open automatically on hover and place the arrow on your "up" state so it indicates that your users will expect a drop down menu to occur.

I think the actual drop down menu is interesting with the picture in there. I'm having a hard time deciding if its too much or just different :) Kudos for trying something original though - I've never seen it before!

Hmm...that's a very good point. I'll work with that some more.

Thanks for the kudos, not 100% original though. I saw that invisible children's site had that and we really liked it. We are also developing a sponsorship model for our patients, so eventually the idea of that was on the "Sponsor" tab we are going to have just 3 or 4 images of kids you can sponsor that will drop down.

This is a really, really well done site Joel. You should be proud of this one! It really hits what I would expect to see going to this organizations website. Nicely done!

    This is just beautiful!

The only thing I would think about is to reduce the background contrast. Just a bit. Depending on the brightness of the monitor it looks a little (just a little!) bit noisy.

    Except that... beautiful!

I wish the navigation stood out more.

Posted on Feb 24, 2010 at 10:49 AM

This is a fantastic looking design. I love how organic and original it feels. I do think that the JQuery moves a bit fast though. I also think that the navigation doesn't stand out as much as it could. I love the text and innovative use of stitching and fabic for the page elements. I also wish that the header was a little tighter so that I could see the image gallery at the bottom of the page. I have a pretty high reslolution and I can't see it. Also, on the homepage, the word Now is cut off on the "Donate Now" button. Overall, this is a great design with a lot of interest. I like the footer - though it has a lot in it, it is nice and tidy. I love the imagery.

Awesome - thank you Jackie. Any thoughts on how you would make the navigation stand out more?

When you say cut off, you mean off your screen, right? What size screen are you viewing on? (I'd like to know both your screen size in inches, and your screen resolution in pixels). Obviously since there are so many sizes visitors are coming from, there is only so much control you will have. But I'd be interested to know what yours is.

      Thanks again!

You are welcome! My resolution is set to 1280x1024 and I have 2 - 19" monitors. Sorry, what I meant by cut off is that the actual word within the green Donate Now button (in the header nav) is getting cut off. It's still within the green button but the word itself is oddly cut off at the bottom. Seems like a css/html thing. Thanks!

Oh, I see. That is funny. Do you have your browser default text set to something larger than 16pt? If so, that might be the culprit, although I don't think it should be. If not, then I'm stumped.

      Which OS/browser are you using?

      Thanks, Joel

    Donate Button and Textual Treatment

Posted on Feb 24, 2010 at 11:35 AM

I'm a frequent visitor of the CURE's current site, so I'm a fan of the organization and feel that your design does this great organization justice...well done!

    Two usability suggestions:

    1) Can you make the "Donate Now" button in the global nav a different color from the green buttons used throughout? That's one of the primary motives of this redesign, and I feel like it gets lost a little being in a low visibility area. Can you make the donate button the darker green from the "CURE" text in the logo?

    2) The text, "healing changes everything." looks like a link to me. I think you'll get a lot of users trying to click there. It's a great tag, I think that maybe italicizing it or something to make it pop would give it a better effect while not appearing to be clickable. It will also make the "donate now" button jump out being a different color.

    3) The 4 options, "Give a child hope and healing, Sign a Cast. Help a child walk., etc., etc.". They don't appear to me as 4 simple ways that I can make a difference to the organization. It might work a little better if they had numbers in front of them (IE - 1. Give a child hope and healing 2. Sign a Cast. Help a child walk., etc.)

    4) The donate option doesn't appear again until the first footer. It falls below the fold. Can you reiterate it creatively in the main content section?

Great work - can't wait to see the finished product.

Hi Josh! You must be Stephen's family (son in law?). He told me you saw the last version I posted.

Thanks for your suggestions, I'm certainly open to them and willing to try different things out. These are some of the most thoughtful and helpful responses I've received.

      Here are some responses...

      1) Good thought, I'll try out the primary green as you've suggested.

      2) What is making it look like a link to you, the shadow underneath the text? Is it making it look like an underline?

      3) They really are not supposed to be sequetial in any fashion. The purpose for that content is going to be to feature our monthly appeals content, or any other current campaigns that are going on. So it's not really going to be sequential.

      4) There is a donate option within the first content piece (by the way those four are just mock content for now, likely some or most of them will be used at some point, but those will probably be replaced with content related to whatever our current campaigns are). But you will see the first, second and third slides all have calls to action that can be clicked.

One thing we are trying to avoid is making the donate features too obnoxious. My goal is to have them clear and easy to find, without having too many donate options all over the place. We have to be careful that visitors don't feel like all we want from them is their money. Part of how we are trying to accomplish that is by giving plenty of content to them, without having to give an equal number of ask buttons.

      Thanks alot for your input!!

... Your work is, by far, more than spectacular. When I dream of talent, your pieces come to mind, every time :D

Your attention to every detail makes for purely original work.

P.S. You still owe us an article on how you go about drafting your templates in gray-scale ;-)

    Submenu Tweek

Posted on Feb 26, 2010 at 1:32 PM

Vey nice Design : ) Well Balanced love the colours, Fonts, Texture and over all placements of Properties.

The only thing I would think about is to add sume effect to sub-menu arrows can be animated with very light effects. could be shaking up-down or may b a blinking colours on arrow. Or can be a segregating line between the arrow and the menu text so it actually makes an understanding of a submenu click.

    Overall the Design Rocks Cheers

    Navigation Mouse over

Posted on Mar 01, 2010 at 4:14 AM

    This is a phenomenal design.

I would only change one usability item: Adding delayed navigational drop downs, ideally is that when a user mouse's over the navigation, they may miss the down arrow, not likely, but may.

Other then that, I love the design, layout, interactivity. Very well done.

Cool, thanks for the kind words!!

Yeah, after several suggestions along that same vein, we decided to make it so the sub-nav drops down on hover over the arrow, but that change will not take place on this mockup. We're moving into a live testing environment now.

      Thanks again for the input!!!
