    Style is not ok

Posted on Feb 16, 2010 at 1:32 AM

    Hello, Ben!

What should I say: I think you should rework it. Here are my comments and suggestions:

    What is not ok?

    1. You have simple but unclean design now. Grunge menu, cracked separator between Events and Featured Organizer and signup underline. Grayish gradient is dirty as for me.

    2. Your grid is not ok. Blocks look distorted. Your start message is center-aligned, other blocks are not.

    3. menu is separated with slashes – it looks like breadcrumbs, not menu itself.

    4. Shadows are not ok. They just don't look right.

    My suggestions:

    1. Make light-light-grayish gradient, straight and glossy separators & menu.

    2. Put your concept to grid (you can take sample at http://960.gs/)

    3. Put a button to signup form.

    4. make navigation larger in upcoming events. They will be the main clickable objects as I think.

    5. make separators in menu vertical.

So, you have much to do :) Don't be offended, please, just trying to help.

it's actually better than I rated it.

But still, I rated not that good, since it's not clear to me what I should do here.

I'd immediately go into browsing the Highlights, they stand out the most. Is that what you want to reach? If not, you might want to consider emphasizing the important parts to the visitor.

Oh, and indeed, there's no 'sign up button' ';)

I'm thinking that the emphasis should be on upcoming events, with highlights as a close second. Basically if they aren't interested in upcoming events, show them how good the past events are to suck them in. I do see that the emphasis should be more clear though, just not sure how yet while keeping the design minimal. I'll keep working at it.

    It's the right direction

Posted on Feb 16, 2010 at 8:11 AM

This is going in the right direction but I think you have a lot of work yet. While i like the clean and simple style that you have here, I think the elements within the site are disorganized, cluttered and make things look more busy than they actually are. Keep working on this concept...

I agree Nate. I definitely like the overall feel, but seemed to be circling as far as the layout was concerned. I'll keep arranging.

    good start but...

its a nice start but looks incomplete I really like the nav, i would try and incorporate that into the hole design. There are way to many fonts used i would try and bring that down. I would make the upcoming events area fill the with of the screen. The random type at the top should go below the upcoming events with bigger type and the put the sign up to the left of that. also the the logo needs to needs a background or color change it gets lost in the design. Basically you need to position everything better. It is a start, keep going at it.

Thanks Mike. The logo isn't the real logo, as I mentioned, I haven't received the logo yet unfortunately.

I originally thought of making the upcoming events span the page, but wasn't sure how to do that without displaying text from the event page when I wanted to just display the name/time/image. I guess I could show mire than one at a time, but again, I would rather not as this company is young and they may not always have mire than ond event to display.

There are only three fonts currently being used (two of them being different forms of Helvetica, but I suppose I could lose the serif font.

I do like your positioning ideas. I'll make some changes and upload a new revision.
