Remove the grey - use colors that are more upbeat.

Posted on Feb 11, 2010 at 12:26 PM

The overall design and functionality is not bad. I think the style needs more work though. I would consider changing up your color palette to include some brighter colors that would reflect infants and babies better. Maybe something like pale yellow, or pastel green and light brown, etc.

Also, your sub nav bg's are hidding the nav items.

Your article headings are getting cut off.

And in your footer some of your items are overflowing. Make the min-height larger.

    Looking forward to seeing more!

      Thanks, Joel.

When you say remove the grey, you mean a white background?

REgarding the cut off titles - I'm aware of that, the titles would be shorter on real content.

Um...yeah, white could work, but it doesn't have to be white. Just something that feels lighter. More baby-ish. Do some research by visiting popular baby product websites, like johnson and johnson products, nuk, etc. Just search in Google for baby products, and then go to the maker's websites. Not saying it will all be good, but you should find some good baby color schemes. Even just looking at the colors used on baby products themselves could be helpful. (ps - just had a baby and designed the announcements so I went through a similar exercise myself recently!)

    maybe a little more blue

Posted on Feb 11, 2010 at 12:30 PM

oh cool, i'm your target audience! :) im 7 months pregnant with my first baby!

ok lets see. color scheme is great sky blue and pink very appropriate. the pink seems to be dominant. could use a little more blue.

the drop down menus are great, nice attention to detail.

the search bar is well done (and to be honest i had too much fun playing with it). as someone who uses the internet quite a bit i know all i have to do is hit enter after i type my key words in.... but when i watch people like my mom and other "average users" type things into a search bar they go for the mouse to hit submit. my mom wouldn't know what to do, so i'd include a submit button.

i like how the featured article is set up. big eye catching image with the header, it was certainly the very first thing my eyes looked at which i'd say is what you want.

as for the rest of the articles, although i like the typography, and the page turning animation, it seems they are missing something. perhaps a thumbnail image to go with each header? something to jazz it up a bit without making it to distracting.

i like the tags at the bottom. maybe make them a shade of blue on hover? instead of the darker pink.

oh and perhaps for the footer maybe some more clouds or some type of subtle illustration to keep it consistent with the header.

i'm not sure if you did the logo but i like it, goes well with the rest of the layout.

i'm iffy about that rainbow above the email subscription form. the mix of colors seems to clash with everything else. perhaps a rainbow with 2 shades of pink, and 2 shades of sky blue? oh hm and perhaps make the input box a rounded rectangle like the search box so it's consistent.

well, overall, getting ready to be a new mom i'd hit the subscribe button if i visited this site since the design looks professionally done, and makes it look run by a credible organization. so on that objective i'd say mission accomplished. :)

      Thanks so much, Jennifer!

You gave me some really good ideas, I love the way you think, and the way you express it... You should be doing this for a living;)

Great site! Maybe lose the grey background?

Posted on Feb 11, 2010 at 10:23 PM

Very nice execution Adam! I love the Web 2.0 feel, nice typography throughout. I have a few comments.

First, I think the grey background is sucking the life out of this. I think you could change to to white and would make a huge difference. See attached modification i did real quick in PS. Seems to make everything pop!

The only other comment I would make is the footer area seems a little clunky. I like the tag cloud but it's so huge and the buttons also feel pretty big.

Hope my input was helpful. Great job!

    too much going on

Posted on Feb 11, 2010 at 11:13 PM

there seem to be too many headings everywhere. But since the site is large that can be understood.

    I like everything about it.

    Great Work!!!

Let the page background go to white!

Posted on Feb 12, 2010 at 5:18 AM

    Hi Adam,

This is a great site design overall. I think you have incorporated several appropriate fun elements into your layout. The large type and banners are great! I feel it was a smart choice to use the pink and blues.

The way that you have tucked the content into individual boxes while maintaining a reasonable feeling of a unified whole is great.

I do feel that for some reason the page has a strong mid gray feeling to it. It could be the gray color used as the body background, or that in combination with the grayish boxes that sit on the page. Plus you are using a gray type as the dominant type on the page. I think that’s a pretty smart standard decision but it does add to the layouts grayish tone.

I might suggest that you let the body background go to white or use an extremely faint gradient to create the soft feeling of clouds. This might be enough to lift the layout out of the gray zone.

    Great work!

    60/40

Posted on Feb 12, 2010 at 7:38 AM

This is a good design, however, I am not a huge fan of the 60/40 split. I would do 75/25 split. Currently the site looks a little busy and cluttered because of it. I like where you are going just work on simplifying things.

    ...

Posted on Feb 12, 2010 at 12:38 PM

    Very nice work overall.

    a few questions/tweaks:

the ARE YOU A GOOD PARENT? FIND OUT text animation thing. Could you have the new content slide in and out instead of just changing? I was confused by the headline I read changing while I had my mouse over it. The Keep me in the loop thing is cool but maybe make it open only onFocus with the email field? the onmouseover makes it a bit see-sawish when you move you mouse around the page.

Are the breaks in the bars over the ads intentional? in the screenshot here they just have half a chunk taken out whereas on the actual site they are completely divided. Maybe dont divide them? they look okay as full lines.

The Search box expansion is great! lovely little interactive touch.

It might just be me but the cut off SUBSCRIBE kinda bugs me.

Oh yes and the non-standard ad units are going to be a pain in the diapers down the road! :-)

Thanks for the review man. The bars are supposed to be totally divided, I guess some browsers/agents (like the one taking the automatic screenshot) render it differently.

I was really wondering if I should go for the non-standard ad size, but I gave myself a break since this is really my first design and I wanted to have fun;)

I'm already regretting this, the AdSense block looks weird, but I guess I'll only change it when I hire someone to redesign completely next year:)

    Colors

All is good but color of background. I think that white will be greater there. And footer should be same or like header - cyan with some clouds

    color combo

Posted on Feb 18, 2010 at 6:31 AM

Nicely done...my only suggestion can be color combo. Instead of too much of gray... will try more with pink & blue.

    Nothing to add more...well done
