    It's a start

Posted on Feb 10, 2010 at 2:25 PM

    Michael

This is a start, but to be honest I would suggest you do a bit more research on the trends out there at the moment.

The colours are pretty hideous, use kuler.adobe and get a better understanding of colour palettes.

as for research on what's cool in the world of design check out the below link:

    http://www.instantshift.com/2009/11/23/70-creative-and-inspirational-website-designs/

Typography - the page headers aren't working... research needed.

About Page - this should be a bit about you and what your experties are - not a blog! If you want to blog, add it as a main menu item.

the adventure - blurb can't read the 'the' because of the trasparency.

Overall there is a lot on your site, which is ok, I think you just need to organise it better...

    Good Luck

    Layout

Posted on Feb 10, 2010 at 3:51 PM

I agree with Aaran, that you have to work on it lots more.

For a start, try to justify your design decisions why user will have to scroll down (or look down) to see the actual content of any page.

Keep the layout same, but do away with things that are not required or won't help you in any way.

The header image has some nice colours. Use them throughout the website. Also, it would be better if you blend the image with the background at its bottom. Like fade it as it goes down.

Don't use multiple mini header. One large is enough.

What I would suggest now is, to first make the current design simple by removing things, start with a grey-scale design, as it gives better idea about contrast and readability of text. Then find some good colours, like the one in the picture and go from there.

Good idea with the header colors. I will have to look into that. What would be a feasible alternative to make my pages shorter? I have a lot of content and I do not want to have to spend a lot of time updating the site.

Also, thank you for the greyscale suggestion. I have never thought of that.

To reduce page length, use a transparent background and place the main menu including the website name/logo on top.

On the home page, the picture behind welcome text, not sure if its really needed. These are the small things which if you downsize it will make your website more better.

Downsize is the keyword there. Your layout/design is good, just simplify.

I just saw your website and saw that the text such as "Web", "Video", "Pictures", "Graphics" all have hover effect and are click-able. If they are links, I honestly feel they are on the wrong position. Anything on top should be more like a heading. This saves your work while doing CSS.

    Make it more personal.

If you want to make a site about yourself, make a site about yourself. You have two people in the header... I don't know which one you are. Use just yourself in the photos, let people learn about you.

Rework your colour scheme, as this comes off a bit too cold and harsh. Greys, blues and greens are all cooler colours. As Aaran mentioned, kuler is a great place to start.

If this is one of your first sites, this is a fantastic start.

    Keep up the hard work!

You have a decent grid system going here, but I think you can make this even stronger by researching design trends. Consistency is very important. Keep your headers in the same place in each of your boxes; ie, above the image. Right now you have some above, below, and beside.

The headers could be more prominent in my opinion also. Maybe try a different font.

Keep your font use to a minimum. Use a maximum of two or three fonts.

Thank you for your comment. Though I would not be who I am without that girl...

What do you mean by grid system? What kinds of trends should I look for? Quite frankly, there are some trends that are terrible.

      Thank you again!

It's very busy and unorganized. You have not achieved the effect with the header and the background. The menu is old styled and these are not the colors. You have to work.

    Segmentation

Posted on Feb 10, 2010 at 3:15 PM

This is way too segmented. It feels very busy and unorganized because of it. I would have to say, I think you need to restart on this concept. I'm not trying to be difficult here, just want to give the most honest feedback possible.

    Typography and color need improvement

Posted on Feb 10, 2010 at 3:28 PM

As design goes, my biggest concern is the typography. You are using many different fonts for all header and subhead information. Everything from the web address to the navigation bar and the content. Rather than giving it a sense of hierarchy it just feel not uniform. I see like five or six different fonts here. Try using just two or three. Within one font you can have a lot of variety.

Also look at how close some of the info is in relation to the boxes you have them in, make sure your leaving enough margin space. I think the photographic content is good but play around with your colors it looks pretty dull. Overall good grid structure with variation between pages. You just really need to finesse this to ensure saying what you want and cutting what you don't need.
