Your basic layout is fine, but the actual design needs alot of work.
It actually reminds me of my first website design.
Try looking around some websites for tutorials on simple designs and working from there.
http://www.psdtuts.com is a site thats good.
Hi there,
I think Alan's right, the basic design is OK.
I would look at adding a footer, Removing the red background, and splitting up the large chunk of text you have there.
The hyphens between the links - they don't help out much, just leave them out or if you have to use vertical dividers instead.
Also as a fire dept is only as good as it's people, why not add some pictures of the people involved. Might bring in some female visitors too - if you had a fireman calendar. I only say this because that's how the fire station around here promotes itself around valentines day.
Padding around the text could do with increasing giving the text some room to breathe.
The logo is a bit big too.
Check out Alan's link. It's a good website to get a few pointers. This website is a good source of inspiration, http://inspirationti.me/websites/clean/
Good luck with the design, hope fully see your revision soon.
Bye.
I think you have a great start.
I would definitely like to see pictures of the fire fighters on the home page, maybe in the banner?
Try using different colors besides just red.
http://www.kuler.adobe.com - a great source to find color schemes. :)
Its a work in progress, keep at it! :)
You can do big changes with just small adjustments to the sizes - and remember white space!
To be honest here, I don't think the design is working very well at all. The red background with white text is a HUGE no no. This also looks like it was designed in the infancy of the web. Very basic, with a clearly defined header, nav bar and content area. Sometimes the best thing we can do is start over on a project. Take a look here www.webcreme.com to gain some inspiration of what is currently out there.
little more punch required for this one
