    Header image

Posted on Feb 02, 2010 at 4:47 PM

If anything I would say the header is an original idea that unfortunately doesn't work. All those images, some upside down really looks strange.

The colours on the site and sidebar really compliment each other and gives a nice effect. I would use the darker brown colour from the adverts as your footer text to make it stand out. The light on light combination doesn't seem to work.

The search bar at the top would probably look better as an input text box with rounded corners, and the search word removed and a magnifying glass put in its place, obviously using the browns for the magnifying glass search button

      Thanks Ben,

Yeah im not too sure about the header, i tried to make it look like they are coming out the mouth. My other thoughts are maybe to have pocorn going in the mouth, not sure though. What do you think?

    Needs more contrast!

Posted on Feb 02, 2010 at 5:11 PM

The colors do not stand out enough and need more contrast between them to make this pop! Try using more of a chocolate as your dark brown and try some other colors other than brown such as tan, faded blue, just play around with using different colors. You can find sites that will help you match colors together better such as http://kuler.adobe.com/.

    Creepy

Posted on Feb 02, 2010 at 9:59 PM

I gotta agree with Ben. The header is really creeping me out, and not in a good way. Good use of Blade though; however, Fox may have a problem with it. In fact, I'm pretty sure none of the studios are going to dig the CP infringement... if you care about that ;)

I'm a big fan of earthy colours, so I like the palette in general, but maybe you could add some green or orange (or even some burgundy) for added "oomph." As it stands, everything bleeds into each other; there is no distinctness.

    Good job :)

Yeah my big worry was the copyright infringement, do you think they would care too much about it? haha.

Maybe best to remove those images and work on the header more.

Fox is NOTORIOUS for "caring." I'd watch out for them. They hunt down images in blog posts. I'm sured you'd get a "takedown notice" seeing as it's part of your banner...

It's always a good idea to respect intellectual property. They may be a faceless corporation that would probably screw you over to churn a profit, but that still doesn't make it right.

Taking art always hits close to home as artists, so I'd say try to respect not the company, but the design firms that were contracted to make all those photos, etc.

The popcorn idea seems ok instead of the film characters.

I would say use (maybe) purple, brown and cream for the layout to provide a more striking contrast. Purple would look awesome for the highlighted tab (Blog) item :D

I will give these changes a try in the next couple of days and post up a new version i think. Not sure about the purple though Ben lol.

maybe just superman flying out of the mouth would be enough? ;) But seriously characters and your head do not blend very nicely.

Great start, lose the guy throwing up

Posted on Feb 03, 2010 at 8:00 AM

I like the general direction you are taking this design. Here are a few ideas:

    1. Lose the guy upchucking the actors. Keep the top area very simple and clean.
    2. Move the search box to the right of the design and display it like a normal search box, no need for the film strip look.
    3. Add a subtle thick stroke to the images.
    4. Darken the text and increase the line height.
    5. Under categories, make the arrows much smaller.
    6. Increase the padding on your "read more" buttons and decrease the text size.

Like I said before, this is really going somewhere. Just error on the side of simple and not cheesy. Looks good so far, great work!

    too plain

Posted on Feb 02, 2010 at 8:09 PM

Agree with Ben Lacey about what he said

Secondly, the site feels too plain with those neutal colours. As its related to films, you might want to make it more glamorous (not sure if this is the right word).
