however the illustration is bad...
the person, that you are inspired by does his drawing's either by pencil or wacom...
can you draw? if so suggest buying a wacom, or scanning your drawing's and then tracing them, until you get he hang of vector illustration.
Good luck!
I'm not sure what the objective is here, but the image just doesnt work. Looks like something done in MS Paint in 30 seconds.
I know this is your first attempt here, but I have to be honest and say the illustration isn't at it's best. The shapes look pretty simple, yet you are using complex gradients and shadows. If you want to go for a very simple look, don't use gradients. Also, the red on the charcoal is extremely hard to read. Sorry to tear this apart, just wanting to be honest.
No no, thats good. The goal here is to convey a message. Very much in the spirit of things like http://xkcd.com/, I just don't want the image to distract from its purpose which it seems to be doing, or you guys just will always want beautiful pictures. The image will always be rough, I want it to get better, but it's going to remain clumsy. I just want it to have a balance of clumsy and useful. I'm posting an updated design to remove the distraction of the gradient and the red on charcoal.
i understand your point here with having the illustration be secondary to the message. However, if you want to do that, do that with simple line shapes, hand drawn objects. Making the 3d with color will always make them stand out more the message.
Right, that's why I took out the gradients like you said and added hand drawn looking buildings. Or you still not digging that?
Yeah, honestly still not diggin' it. These are great examples of what you are trying to do:

Agreed that maybe doing actual pen sketches and scanning that is a better approach for the medium. Vector illustrations can be somewhat unforgiving, but handrawn sketches are always very forgiving.
You didn't have to use a vector application for this. Gimp, or even MSPaint, would have sufficed :P
I don't really mind the neu-web-comic style you want applied. Not as much as the idea trying to be presented anyway. I think the piece could use more clarification.
Good luck
Doesn't really communicate much to me :P but it's a nice try, maybe make it a starting point to a longer story?
The apple icon is confusing - it looks like it could be a mouse, or a pear.
The illustration needs some tlc. Nice concept, but I'm not sure I understand it.
well if it your first try it's not bad but keep going to read and know the latest vector & illustration techniques to be more telnet & creative , good luck
Yeah, the apple logo looks like a pear. I don't know if it's intended to be this way...
Try to add more colours and it will look very nice as a comic design.
Either this borders on retardation or Its going over my head .
Take heart I said the same thing about Celine Dion and they tell me she does quite well.
