    Better...

Posted on Jan 21, 2010 at 8:02 AM

This is getting there, just a few more things to address:

    1. Add some sort of shape behind the two paragraphs at the bottom. You need to unify these in some way. The site is looking segmented and disjointed. I would try some sort of white shape with a subtle drop shadow that fades out on the sides.
    2. Thicken the stroke at the top of the page slightly.

Let's see what comes of those changes, let me know if you have questions.

Thanks. Do you mean the red line way at the top or the gray one that is right below the logo?

Uppercase small caps need to go

Posted on Jan 20, 2010 at 5:28 PM

This is just my opinion, but using small caps and capitalizing the first letter looks tacky. I would just make it all small caps lowercase. Something about the letter being bolder and bigger just looks awkward.

Maybe also align the baseline of the "Zenoval" with the baseline of the navigation text (so portfolio).

Other than that, I like the color scheme and layout.

Needs some UMPH - just feels weak

Posted on Jan 20, 2010 at 7:45 PM

Don't mean to be harsh but this design just doesn't do much for me. For one thing, the headings with small caps don't really compliment the logo that well.

I know you're going for clean and minimal, but I think there's alot of refining you could still do. Hope to see more.

    featured projects area..

Posted on Jan 21, 2010 at 3:14 AM

concept is simple and nice. I agree with the previous reviewers on that small caps thing. You used lower case in the navigation and in the logo tagline as well. I think probably the sentence case will work fine for the headers.

I would make the featured works as a slider with (like a jcarousal) arrows and show bit more projects here (at least another set) since there is not much content. best wishes.

Menu should go to the right

Posted on Jan 21, 2010 at 6:54 AM

It might have been better if the menu was aligned right. Or does it mess up the white space?

I also agree that you should make the headers all small caps. Sliding effect of featured design would also look good. Maybe adding some text to it or hover effect.

Since you want people to contact you when looking at your website and your work it would be a good idea to put some contact info on the homepage.

I also suggest some using some slogan, that will make it easier to remember you.

    Good luck!

    too much whitespace

Posted on Jan 21, 2010 at 7:42 AM

You are on the right track with keeping the red to a minimum, but the design could use some more elements (maybe a very slight gradient for the content containers or a textured background to isolate some of the white space).

For the nav, I think it should be bottom aligned with 'web design' and possibly right aligned.

Also, the top and middle sections are using the one third design principle, but the bottom is cut in half. These techniques can work together, but not when they are only divided by small horizontal lines. Maybe it will look better if you filled in the featured area with a light color. Good luck.
