    stroke around main heading

Posted on Jan 12, 2010 at 4:02 PM

    This site looks great.

I would consider changing "featured work" to Visit my Portfolio (or something with an action) and same with the recent blog. It reads as if you do web development and content creation.

I would also see how it looks without the translucent stroke around your first box. It sticks out a little to me. But, it could just be me!

    Great job!

    Text Shadows

Posted on Jan 12, 2010 at 7:12 PM

Hi Nathan, good looking site. I've been through the pages on the live site and these were standing out for me.

Center the main navigation. If you remove float right on the class 'right' it seems to center it so you can easily check out how this looks (fire bug it).

The drop shadow on text and links doesnt work for me. I would also add a little bit more line-height on the paragraphs. No shadow, and line height 26 seemed nice to me on the home page paragraph (using Firebug).

On the services page, I expected the different services you offer to link to other pages because they 'glowed' and there was a bottom border on the squares.

Under About page, add your photo, dont be shy ! :).

Contact page, I wouldnt have Budget as a drop down.

    Other than that top job!

    css out of 2.1 ?

Posted on Jan 12, 2010 at 7:33 PM

With most of us (and savvy customers) basing validation on the 2.1 9W3c)schema I think you may asking for some tight trouser days with 41 errors on the home page .

Appreciating that many of the newer browsers can handle opacity ,shadow etc already there are still many that cannot.

Certainly with ie6 which I no longer support but lots still insist - you could foreseeable notice performance problems as it cannot even render the current schema never mind outside.

The Vista thing is groovy but to my eye clashes with the first "screeny" on the left perhaps for the home page picking something more complimentary from your portfolio may serve you better. Im not sure if you are using Images for your text on the nav tabs but they are quite blurry FF latest at 1280 x 1024 . A basic screen size change courtesy web developer tool bar ff latest choppered your view port in half at the infamous 800x 600.

Switching off styles similar to a crude panic degradation test did render a usable page

thanks for your thoughts! I'm actually validating my site against css3 - I know it's not 100% valid yet - because of the use of some css3 effects.

I considered the 800x600 issue when making the site, but I'm not too worried about that because of the thousands of visitors my site has had over the last year, only 39 have been at 800x600.

    Nice

Posted on Jan 13, 2010 at 4:14 AM

Very nice look and fell. Navigation is easy and straight forward. I think a web designer website has to be modern and appealing because it's the best example of what you could do for your clients. Your website just do this very well. When I see, I feel I could trust you to build my website.

Only negative comment is the size of the ndzynes banner at the top. I find it too big for my screen resolution (1280*800). That causes the black box that displays the title of the page (services or portofolio etc) to be in the center of my screen. It means I have to scroll down to see the content of the page which is pushed too much towards the bottom of the page. Apart from this, great site.

    Too busy

Posted on Jan 13, 2010 at 8:08 AM

This is getting way too busy. I like the background, but if you're going to use it, you need to simplify things. The content area also feels pretty awkward and unfinished. Extend the light gray box below "Web Design & Development..." to the entire width of the box above it.

Maybe try adding some sort of plain, slightly transparent background on the content area? Below are some sites that are good inspiration for you:

      Good luck on this one!

Overall, a great concept. I'm not sure about the "WEB DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT...PERFECTED" block (and the one beneath it). I like the wording, but if it were me I would play around with the arrangement and transparency a bit more. Honestly, it is good as it, but I think with a little more time and effort... it has the potential to be great!

Good job and keep it up!

Posted on Jan 13, 2010 at 11:45 AM

don't get me wrong, this is a really nice design, but it doesn't reflect your message. you're not just a web designer, but also a developer. this website looks like a designers work. you want to convince customers that they can expect more than just design, but websites that actually do something! 10 different colours and fancy graphics probably don't help that cause too much.

Posted: on Jan 13, 2010 at 12:37 PM

that is a very fine question and if i could, i'd probably have told u in my first post. the dark background may work if you get it right (and again, i dont have any idea right now how to do it), but to me brighter colours are an easier base to work on. sorry for this very imprecise description, but as u might notice i'm not too inspired right now ;)

LOVE that background. Feels like a rave. I would say however that the spacing in the body stands out a mile for me. For clients? Maybe not so much, but I noticed it straight away. How about recent blog irems? or a call to action? Quote button perhaps?

    Good work though.

Yeah, between featured works and recent writings there's way too much spacing. It leaves the elements floating in space. Try using a constant 20-30px gutter in your designs when creating body content. 20px preferably.

Nice work dude. Design is excellent and even navigation buttons too. Check out for fixed background as in www.envato.com it may look better for other pages where height is more, like portfolio pages. For it add 1px transparent png as background. for what I mean to say just check out the look of envato website

    pretty cool

Posted on Jan 17, 2010 at 1:29 PM

I have to say that I really like this design. I do however have a few comments to make about it:

    1. what's with the logo?...its like the letter "n" but then it has that weird dot at the bottom. I might consider making it something more applicable to your company name
    2. I might add about 15px of padding between each of the elements (except the two columns on the home page.) Right now its sort of squished.
    3. I think you overdid the gradient on the words "Web Design and dev...perfected"...make the gradient go from white to a lighter shade of grey.
    4. I would make the separators in the footer a lighter color
    5. add some more line-height in the recent writings section

Overall though, you've got a great design. (I love the navigation hover...totally sweet!)

    Sorry! not a professional design

Posted on Jan 19, 2010 at 5:07 AM

I Strongly feel the design and the way you built was not so impressive. Portfolio Site shows your potential and how creative you are. So it should be very clear, simple and reflect your creativity.

    • cropping the background image to 1 pixel width and repeat it over x will reduce file size of bg.

    • Unnecessary shadow on text is making it hard to read.

    • multiple HTTP requests for loading images and JQuery library is bringing down page performance (I see JQuery Library and Main Menu got downloaded multiple time).

    • your logo eating up all the top section, where user has to scroll always even for little content. I suggest to have a slider with your portfolio sites scrolling with more info link pointing to Portfolio page on the empty space rite to logo.

between the footer is nice ;)

    More contrast for better scanning

Posted on Jan 20, 2010 at 3:16 PM

The design is beautiful, though there are things you can improve. You lack any clear calls to action. The background is the strongest focal point on the page which detracts from your content. The content is not easily scan-able which may make it difficult for new visitors. You may want to consider a textured translucent black content container to increase the contrast. Also it would be worth creating some type of call to action in the space to the right of the content container opposite the logo. Overall nice work.

    navigation

Posted on Jan 12, 2010 at 3:57 PM

I like the colors and the style, it's all working. For wording the 3rd line of larger text - "work even harder", may sound better and be correct if it was "work even better". I guess it depends on your approach, works better sounds like the code is more refined and works better, harder would be maybe it acts as a better sales tool or something.

The navigation I would probably center, looks off balanced being right aligned, plus you have a lot of centered elements already.

    Middle Section

Posted on Jan 12, 2010 at 4:04 PM

I like it... it's got some nice depth going on... it intrigues me, but if I were to take away the ambient BG the structure of the page itself is lacking needs a bit of tweaking.

One suggestion would be to work on the middle portion - "Web Design & Development Perfected" and text underneath... it feels slapped on and floaty but not in a good way.

Almost want to see the nav centered so it flows with that middle section better...

There also seems to be a huge amount of dead space in the section where the logo is... i know it is to show of the BG... but if I was a client I'd be interested in seeing your work.

I would love to see other pages with different types of content and how they work within this structure.

    cool though... keep going

    navigation color

Posted on Jan 12, 2010 at 5:03 PM

It looks great and I love the navigation, but I find it a little off that the "about" section and "home" section of the navigation use the same color. It can be a little slow sometimes but I didn't notice anything too out of the ordinary as far as load time.

I might tighten the top up a little bit though to bring the logo a little closer to the content and navigation (not too much though, the white space is good, there's just already so much of it on the right side of the screen). I agree about eliminating the translucent stroke on the first box.

    content elements

Posted on Jan 12, 2010 at 5:46 PM

I like the navigation and the portfolio section, but the home page and other pages could be improved. It's a good start.

Home: There seems to be too much going on wiht the various colors and alignments. I think the intro text should be organized into a translucent container and set from the middle of the page to the right. It's current position and container look awkward. The background design is catchy, but the plain heading underlines look out of place.

Content pages: The mixture of small line height, lack of padding around the text and headings, and white on dark are making these pages hard to read. I would add some padding and space the boxes into rows of 2 or 3. Consider another heading treatment than text on a black rectangle to compliment the other cool features of the design.
