Vikings, as in raiding and pillaging?

Posted on Jan 12, 2010 at 5:05 PM

Please tell how the initial idea of "vikings" are supposed to come off as a good source for "attracting new clients"?

When I look at the design and my eyes adjust to the whole "picture" I really feel that they both work extremely well.

Overall this is a great design.

The font is superb. Though I would like to see "DESIGN STUDIOS" stretched out horizontally to the end of the container. Perhaps with a ruler put in place to separate the two variable types?

I understand that Viking might be a strange name for a design company. It might have pejorative connotations. But think about other companies, like Apple. Apples don't have anything to do with computers.... And the bitten apple can make one think about the original sin, which can also be pejorative...

I've been thinking about company names for a long time. And if you want to please everyone you'll end up with a boring name, in my opinion. But thanks again, cause I'd like to hear more opinions on my name choice.

I think there are some strong words associated with vikings, like "exploring", "courageous" and like "going new places" which I think can be applied in a positive way to creativity... But it might be to far-fetched?

    I like it!

I like your idea, but I would change the font to something more bold, and use a different color scheme. Maybe a lighter blue to blue gradient?

    Simplify

Posted on Jan 13, 2010 at 11:33 AM

Looks pretty good. The top concept seems a bit busy. i would try and simplify the background to 1color. Also have you tried to use the letter V to make yhe viking horns? Good Start

    kerning

Posted on Jan 12, 2010 at 8:13 AM

    Hi "Mad" ;-)

I like the concept. The font looks good, but:

    • Try to play with the kerning (between V and I and K), looks a bit noisy
    • The "Design Studios" is very small. It is already hard to read, but what if you have to shrink it even more?

    But good start!

PS: I like the second, perhaps with blue letters.

Thanks Marc! Would you make the kerning looser or tighter? You have a good point about "design studios", but my fear is that if I make it bigger, there won't be enough contrast between "Viking" and "design studios".

Hard to say if looser or tighter. Problem is the space between V and I which moves the letters for the eye. Perhaps try another font where the V is not so oblique. Same for "design studios". Perhaps you find a font which is "higher".

Something completely different: I just saw only the half of your logo because I scrolled down. That looks nice! I cant add a file anymore here, but try to put only the horns above the letters.

    A little busy

Posted on Jan 12, 2010 at 8:41 AM

Overall I like the concept. The colors work really well together and the vertical format looks good. However, I feel like the imagery is taking the focal point whereas you want the text to take the majority of the focus. Try shrinking the square and centering it on the lettering. You could also try a positive image of the viking hat. Good start here though.

Good ideas, i'll try and work around that. Thanks for the feedback.

    #2 is better

Posted on Jan 12, 2010 at 12:30 PM

    Design

The second one is a lot cleaner. I suggest changing the colour of the title and making "design studios" larger.

    Concept

As for the choice of imagery, there is no evidence that vikings actually wore horned helmets. There is one helmet that was recorded to have horns, but the horns were spiraled. Much of the hype toward horned helmets began in Sweden in the late nineteenth-century.

In the early Middle Ages, viking berserker warriors did sometimes wear things like deer antlers to intimidate their enemies, but manuscript images of these warriors have never depicted helmets made from bull horns.

If you're going to use a cliché, i just want you to be aware of the image's actual history - take it or leave it; this isn't a critique against the design itself.

      Thanks Serina!

I did my little research before starting, and read about the horned hat myth. I decided to go with it anyway, although the "drakkar" went through my mind as well.

The way I see it is that even though the horned hat are not hystorically correct, they style represent Vikings for most people, kind of like a perrot or a wooden leg would remind you of a Pirate, even though most pirates probably still had both legs.

Thanks again to everyone, this site is pretty cool, i'm gonna use it again for sure. I'll post an update to this logo later for more feedback.

    mad...

this is a nice simple design and a good start...

I agree with Nate, it would be good to bring the logo down on the same level as the viking or somehow incorporate it into the viking!

Font for viking is nice, and works well. I would increase teh design studios a bit so that it has a bit more oomph to it.

    Overall it's a great start!

    concept

i love the concept, but not sure if i am feeling the "vicking" typeface with the horns, the typeface is very curvy (avant gardish) and the horns usually represent strength, it just seems like a clash to me. but i think it is an awesome concept

    clarity

Posted on Jan 12, 2010 at 3:13 PM

good beginning for the logo. Don't use a striped background - the solid adds clarity.

just a thought - maybe you could "zoom out" and have the whole face of a viking? A lot harder I know, but if done right it would look great imo.
