    Big footer

Posted on Dec 24, 2009 at 7:06 PM

Very nice design! Great colors. Only I think that the footer is very big with a lot of information.

Thanks for your feedback. The footer is intentional as the site is very content heavy. We wanted a way to give the users a "dashboard" to the most common items on every page.

    looks good

I really like both the clean design and the more rugged designs. I think the rugged may fit a little bit better for children as they're always getting dirty themselves.

Haha, good point. From a concept perspective the gritty look was really to identify more with the international community where we operate. Our hospitals are all in developing countries like Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Afghanistan, etc.

Excellent work, texturization might get heavy?

Posted on Dec 30, 2009 at 9:02 AM

Joel - some excellent work right here! Clean layout, nice use of color to accent the call to action. My only concern is the weight of the site once finished. I really like the texture use everywhere but wonder if it's not going to slow it down too much.

    Either way, nice work!

Thanks Aurimas! Yeah, I have my own concerns about the weight too, but I'm building out a sample home page to find out, and have high hopes that with good use of sprites and well compressed image files I should OK.

Text Blocks in "Cure News" section.

Posted on Dec 30, 2009 at 12:45 PM

    Hi Joel,

I definitely like the last colored version the best. The first thing I said for the grey version was "where's the color?"

I enjoy the last version for several reasons, the color, the smiling faced pictures and the opportunity to view other children under "see our kids."

There are just a couple things that may make a difference when it comes to your text: Under the "Cure News " section. The first line of text is awfully long and looks a bit awkward in the boxed area as you have it. Maybe consider aligning all the text to under the title "Clubfoot Siblings..." and ending the first text line at the end of the word "...CURE" in that title. This way it will push the text to the next line and make it look much better.

I like the space(padding) that you give around your text in the block above "DONATE NOW" I am wondering if you used the same padding around your text block under your "Latest Posts" ( for the text block seems a bit pushed to the left inside that framed block.)

In the last version: Currently an arrow accompanies your "Donate Now" button, yet, an arrow does not accompany your other main colored links on the page.

I like " Give the gift of Healing" better than "Help Cure Now" . Is the word "NOW" needed in all your donation links?

Well, Overall, I think it is a lovely site.

Amy. thanks for your input. Very thoughtful and you've made some good points I'll have to look at. Soon I'm going to close this concept and "post a new version" with the actual HTML and CSS mockup I've been working on...I hope you'll give me some feedback love on that one too!

Hi Amy, I'm back at work and reviewing some of the suggestions you've made above. Thanks again for your helpful thoughts.

One question I have is in your 4th paragraph above you refer to my "Latest Posts" and made a suggestion about the padding of that element. I'm not sure I understand where you are referring to. Would you mind clarifying that please?

Also, just to answer your question about the use of the word "NOW" that is something my VP of Communication feels pretty strongly about using, and there are a couple good reasons. One is that our site URL is helpcurenow.org, and the other is that you'll find it is a recommended best practice for fundrasing to use the word "NOW" rather than just Donate or in similar Calls to Action.

Also "Gift of Healing" is specific to our Christmas Gift Catalog appeal, so we would not want to use it other than that to prevent confusion.

      Thanks again!

      Hi Joel,

On the last version presented above under "Latest Posts" you have the text in a text box. Basically, I was suggesting to center the text block, in the text box keeping the left alignment as you have it.

Thanks for letting me know about the word "Now" and such.

    nothing!

Posted on Jan 04, 2010 at 12:56 PM

    I would defintely use #4. (I assume #1 is just a wireframe...)

The last on is just wow!...ITs amazing! The layout is solid and the grunge effect complements the site perfectly. I'm giving you a 5 for design.

The only problem I might have, is that the foot is humongous...but then I guess its ok to have it that big.

    Great job!

    Hello Joel,

I prefer the last design. The first design looks corporate while you should feel warmth of those kids. Also I like the smiling kids alot better then the - overused - desperate kid.

    My compliments, great design!

This is a great project and there is nothing that I can see that could improve the design what-so-ever.

I do have a question however. Is there a defined process or methodology to setting up a gray-tone framework like that? I've heard it's useful for figuring out the edges and then going in to select from your color palette.

      Joel Glovier commented:

Well the reasoning for the wireframe is so you can layout your general architecture without having to do all the detail work first.

This is beneficial because really the content should drive the design, and the architecture should drive the style. So if you start with a framework, then once you have decided you framework is right, you can always try out different styles of design on your framework.

      Good question.

That is an excellent question and an excellent response. Joel - would you be interested in contributing to CF at some point? I was thinking a tutorial or a little article about something like this. Framework -> focus -> style, etc. I'm putting together some specs for a resources section of the site with articles for various groups of concept creators.

    more emotion

Posted on Dec 25, 2009 at 3:39 AM

I like version 2 with grey and green, it's modern and trendy, this is the best of the 3 in my opinion. The big footer is also very nice.

I would have let more space to the main picture in order to make feel an emotion to the user when he reaches the website.

It's about giving a hope to a children, and in version 3 they are already smiling, so users could think ok somone already helped them.

These are very very nice designs my friends. Very well done, I think you would be fine using any of them. The third and fourth designs are my favorite but the the second design comes in a close second. I would use the second design as it is different from most designs out there for the subject matter. You would be fine with using any of these though. VERY WELL done!!

THanks man! I'm working on a sample build of the homepage for our Sr. Management at:

      http://static.helpcurenow.org/test/redesignMockup/redesignsamplebuild.html

(except you have to add underscores between redesign, sample, and build since this forum seems to be removing them in favor of italicizing the middle word)
