I really like the perspective N mark you show on the t-shirt, hat and mug.

But not so much then whole NEXT word done in the neon sign style... although it's growing on me...

Thanks for the comments Sean. I never thought of it as neon but, now you have me taking another look at it. I think I will keep it a solid color now. Thanks again.

    Kerning

Posted on Dec 23, 2009 at 12:54 PM

I prefer #2 out of all of them, it is clean and feels appropriate(I'm not wild about the gradient - it doesn't quite fit with your company's focus IMO). I would look at kerning in the "NEXT" a bit tighter... the letterforms seem a bit distant from one another. I like this execution best because I feel that it is representational of a map, or wayfinding... that I am following paths that lead me to the next thing (which is why I think slightly tighter kerning may work better) I love the "N" in perspective... again it reinforces navigation through space and adds the element of "environment" - good work

I totally agree with you Jonathon. Like Sean above says it looks like neon. Not what I was going for. #2 is my fav as well . Simple and honest. I like your comment about "representing a map and following paths" That is kind of what I wanted to relate. I'm glad you got it. I will try and tweak the kerning a bit and repost an update. Any suggestions on how and when to use the "N" mark?

      Thanks again.

    I like the "n"

Posted on Dec 23, 2009 at 1:28 PM

I like the "n" as an object in your logo. I would use that as an object and write out next in a regular font. The current way you have it messes with readability too much and just isn't really working. But like I said, I do love the "n" and where you have it on the clothing and some of the other materials looks really cool.

Thanks for your honesty Nate. I will give it a go. Any other suggestions on how and when to use the "N" mark?

I would use the N as an object on the logo. You could set it up horizontally to the left of "next designs". Keep it simple and light.

I would put "next" in a regular font.

I like the N and the x the most. Also really dig the n on the hat and the embossed n in the circle (image 3).

I have gotten a few comments from friends saying that it was on the verge of looking like neon. I'm afraid if I connected the letters that that is exactly what it would look like. Any suggestions? Thanks for the crit.

I do see you and your friends point about if you connected the letters it might look more like a neon sign. Here are the reason why I see "neon sign": rounded corners, fluid "flourish" letters, and color. If I were trying to change that perception, I would try to tweak those aspects. However, I do like what you've done already. I noticed that you focused on the "n" in a few of the designs (changing the perspective). I like this the most because it's unique and demonstrates the most creativity about your brand. It's what you've used on the hat in image 3 and the "N' in the circle (opposite the hat) in image 3. Just the "N" and the perspective make me visually connect with the word "next". I think it's the most simple representation of "next" that you've produced without being traditional. Anyway, I hope I'm making since and that this helps. :)

I'm sure you can do something more with cards. You have really designed an identity here.
