Not much - text align mainly

Posted on Dec 19, 2009 at 5:56 PM

These guys usually want mega symmetry and your text wanders quite a bit .

I would suggest using a grid I use Gridfox but there are lots of others out there.

From there make sure everything is left aligned (text) or aligned period.

Typography, spacing, are long term skills with a client you may get a hint with comments like "make it like so and so"

-with a template house you may want to study successful authors it will be down to a handful of forms you can borrow till you can develop your own chops ala what they think works.

Thanks a bunch of the tips. I will look into a grid system. What do you mean with a template house? I'm a little confused on the last parts of your review.

Usually a company/site that specializes in templates(slang:template house) has set of star designers that tap into 4 or 5 ways of presenting and keep rehashing the same thing because it sells .

Look for the handful of designers that keep a high profile and learn from there work what that small set or "model"requires.

    Grid

Are you using a grid system? ie 960 grid or anything? Would probably help keep things together if not. Also the three columns at the very bottom feel a bit off to me. Like they aren't the same size or something? So they just kinda feel weird. Also I might suggest putting the social networking icons underneath the text bodies. May not work but I guess worth a try.

    Alignment

Posted on Dec 20, 2009 at 12:32 AM

The text alignment looks very suspicious in some places. In the [Services We Offer] box in the sidepanel I can identify at least 5 different text alignment points.

However having said that I also think that this page is missing the small details that seperate ordinary pages from good pages. You have a good base layout but now its time to add some passion and to be a perfectionist about things.

For example: [ email address ] [ subscribe] What am i subscribing to here? An rss feed? A newsletter? Company Promotions? Add an icon or something that makes this clear. If its RSS then an RSS icon.

In your feature area, where you have the [project description:] text you need a call to action. A [read more] button or something like that. You have presented the information now you want to guide the user to do something about that.

The Home buton in the navigation looks like its not sitting exactly in the middle of the button.

This could be my eyes playing tricks on me but the [ Go ] button next to the search seems to be of a different style to your [ subscribe ] and [ view more services we offer ] button.

You seem to be using a few too many different fonts.

You seem to be using anti-aliasing on all of the text and I think there are gradients on the heading texts. How are you going to implement this in a practical way?

I can go on but I think you get the point. Its a beautiful website but its lacking those small touches that only somebody who is very passionate about designing websites would take their time to do.

Thank you, I was looking for a really in-depth review like this. I appreciate your time for writing the review and I will look into it. I've made about 5 different version of this and I've tended to over-look a lot of things.

I really like the background image! Gives the website a nice feel! Overall not that keen on scrolling as much as you would here but if you need all the info on the main page then tuff! Well done!

    study the font sizes

Posted on Dec 20, 2009 at 10:09 AM

    the design is fine

just as you mentioned, they told the spacing and typography need to be revised..

u still have unbalanced spacing between text here and there, plus you keep in mind the ratio between those elements on the page..

for example, the lists under the what we do.. you might consider taking them off.. or change alignment.

put a separator between what we do and what we can offer you ..

the themeforest banner below that.. is a bit too dark to show up here.. use a white banner instead.

    good luck

    Great start.

Posted on Dec 21, 2009 at 7:57 AM

This is a fantastic start and I think you'll be able to get this to work. Here is what I think they were talking about and the things that I see as well:

    1. The spacing in the header is off. Have the same amount of blank space at the top and bottom of the logo header. Consider taking the slogan line off.

    2. Alignment of softlegit header. Get rid of "project description and use the "SoftLegit Web Design" as the header for the paragraph. The arrows on the image need to be adjusted a bit. They don't seem to be aligned with anything. Move the two buttons below the paragraph on the left.

    3. You have some alignment issues within the content area. Your paragraphs need to be aligned left with your headers. Add more constant space between the buttons and the content above them.

    4. Under the services we offer box, align all of the text to the left...don't indent like you have done here.

    5. Simplify the footer area by taking out the logo area at the top of the footer.

    6. Your headers within the footer must all be aligned left with the rest of your content. Right now it looks like blog roll is indented. .

    7. Throughout the entire page you could use some more line-spacing. Try to increase that a bit so everything is just a bit more legible.

    8. Go through and make sure everything is consistent. Headers of the same amount of spacing. Text treatments are the same throughout. Button spacing and image spacing is all similar and your use of color also needs to be consistent throughout.

This is a great start, just refine it a bit.
