    I like everything except...

Posted on Dec 08, 2009 at 7:12 AM

I don't like the way that you have connected everything with the faded background. Take the background off of recent work and just leave it on the wood and I think you will have a successful design on your hands. Everything else is top notch, great work!

    New, more original background

Posted on Dec 08, 2009 at 8:54 AM

I like the simplicity, but how about introducing a couple of more colors to your palette? It's hard creating a simple design that still feels completed and full of details. Also, I'd see if I could find another background image, I don't think I've seen a picture being used as much as that one.

Giving low score for originality as all these portfolio sites look more or less the same. There's a reason why they do though.

I changed the layout slightly...I'm going to seriously consider using a different background...completely original this time :-)

      Thanks!

    Simple and elegant

Posted on Dec 09, 2009 at 11:01 AM

I like this, very nice and "quiet". Looking at the link and seeing the whole page, I can´t think of things to change, except...maybe the word "designing" should also be blue? You can link it to your portfolio.

I think if I add to many blue links, I will look messy, otherwise I would have made it a link.

    Hey CodeDude

Posted on Dec 10, 2009 at 11:14 AM

I would like to see what the content will be.. you've got some lorum ipsum there.. I would put an image that is less generic and more categoristic of who you are in the about.. everyone has something funny and strange that might peak viewer's interest, instead of a happy face. I love the use of museo here! :) usually code guys are more interested in using web friendly fonts, so i'm impressed to see a "code guy" who has done so much font research and utilization. for some reason i hate those checkmarks under your skills. and the bottom says "(this stuff is Copyright.. Don't steal!) which is playful, but i think you need to word it better.. maybe.. "copyright 2009... don't steal!" or you could just put the copyright symbol there instead of writing it out. "this stuff is ©.. so don't steal!" i do like the background, and cool color scheme. worry less about votes and more about finishing! ill vote it up when you put all your content and work in. keep going, you're doing great.

You known I really am I designer at heart-I don't really know why I call myself codedude.

The reason that this site is so "impersonal" is because it is just one of several portfolios that I am thinking of using. If I don't use it, I'll probably turn it into a free wordpress theme.

I changed the check images to something else-not sure I like those ones either though.

I also changed the Copyright to something better.

Thanks for the (very!) helpful review!

    Feature more work

Posted on Dec 11, 2009 at 10:41 AM

Its clear, Quick and easy to understand. But I would suggest that you rethink the entry page. If you are a designer you probably want to "pitch" how good you are. I think you should feature more work on the front page. And the portfolio link is a bit to subtle. One of the most important things is your previous work. It should be easier to find it.

I like the design. Colors works, quite a pleasure for the eyes and very simple.

Though not a fan of the tab like heading design. Looks boxy. Try giving the a few curves. ;)

The site seems incredibly user friendly. I do not care for the overall "dark feel" of the site and would try to lighten it up with some splashes of color in various places i naddition to or in replace of the blue type.

Overall I dig the large featured box in the middle of the site. It jumps out and isn't to cmall which most are.

    Great Job

    Design something

Posted on Dec 13, 2009 at 4:05 AM

On first look it blends in a little too much with the rest of the big headlined, wooden background, transparency websites out there. In short it looks a little too cookie cutter.

The background isn't seamless, the image of main focus bleeds through the transparency on the right and it just looks like you didn't put much thought into it.

I'm sorry if I'm being harsh, but if you're going to promote your work in design, it should be represented with a little more "design".

    new lighter background

Posted on Dec 13, 2009 at 11:16 AM

its beautifully executed. love the fonts used.

my concern is the dk grey wooden background. there is so much of it that it is heavy and overwhelming to me. it's just a big mass of blah with a punch of airy when i try to get a handle on how it makes me feel when i look at it... how does it look with a beech colour wood background or a golden brown hue of wood?

Consider whether your target audience is non-technical customers (business owners, etc.) or other programmers/designers. If it's the former, the list of skills won't mean much to your audience.

    Menu

Posted on Dec 14, 2009 at 6:40 AM

It looks good, clean and to-the-point layout. The menu seems a bit lost though, does not really seem like part of the design.

How about adding an image of a page that has another form? Instead of the banner at the top and the 2 boxes in the middle?

    The "smile"

Posted on Dec 14, 2009 at 8:26 AM

Good job on this concept! The colors are great and the font choice is very adequate. This has an original look that should be followed by all elements, including the "smile" under About and the bullets for each item under My Skills. These illustrations are standard ones and I feel that they don't match the style of the rest of the page.

    body background

Posted on Dec 07, 2009 at 7:12 PM

You're off to a great start; all the colors work well and the navigation is great, I would however make the transparent black where the content is a fixed size, being "jagged" as it is makes it look broken.

    the wording

Posted on Dec 07, 2009 at 8:16 PM

This is looking really nice. Lots of white space to allow the eyes some space to move around. I feel like since the words will be the first thing a visitor will read, it might need some rewording. The word "things" seems kind of vague and perhaps unnecessary. You could just say "with a knack for design." Also the next sentence starts with the word "Combined" and I'm not sure what that refers to. Perhaps its supposed to all be one sentence "I'm a web guy with a knack for design, combined with ..."

I dig the wood texture. As my friend says "Everything looks better on a wood background" haha.

great design and arrangement of the elements. I like especially the fonts you use.

The only thing that is a little bit confused, the columns stand outside of the content elements.
