Chet, I figured instead of just voting down I'd review your site - it's probably more helpful that way.
First of all - design. Your logo is of really poor quality (not compression). It's sketchy and hard to read.
The logo file is a png, which takes up 200KB. That's an insane size for a logo - not to mention there's no need to make it transparent and use png.
Design wise - the text blocks are really hard to read in the main area. The web is not a book - read some information about proper text formatting here http://www.thedesigncubicle.com/2008/12/10-common-typography-mistakes/ and here http://markboulton.co.uk/journal/comments/fivesimplestepstobetter_typography/
The color choices are ok, but the design is really bland, not something I would trust if I was looking to hire a web developer.
You know what they say - give and you shall receive. ;) Sometimes reviewing other peoples concepts will land you more reviews, just something to keep in mind.
I know my review might have sounded harsh - but hopefully it will help you in the long run.
I wouldn't have called it harsh. You were at least constructive rather than berating.
I haven't had as much time to review as I'd like yet. I also don't want to go into someone's concept just to say, "I agree with Person X." Seems like a waste of their time.
Thank you again for your advice.
Chet,
If you want to sell design services, your website should show what you're capable of. You need to make sure it's simple, beautiful and perhaps funky. You need to differentiate yourself from the thousands of webdesigners around.
You're website is rather poor. The logo is poor and the website looks amateur and is overpopulated with text. You need to make it simpler. You're selling design, not poetry...so show some fancy design and forget about all that text.
I don't particularly like the colours you chose...or at least the way you mixed them. The bands on the side don't add anything and don't look great either. If I was a web designer, I would go for a funkier style, perhaps with flash animated menus and warmer and stronger colours. Be bold. Be different. Hope this helps.
I appreciate you taking the time to actually leave some feedback. The site was beginning to become rather discouraging to use with no feedback at all.
Thanks for the links, and the logo advice. It's definitely enough to make me actually get in with a friend of mine and get a better logo. I've been quite unhappy with this one for a while.
I will return with an updated design.
Thanks again for your help.
