A little bit info about you

Posted on Oct 29, 2009 at 11:58 PM

    Hello Mr. Schwabe,

I quite like that lighting and the 3D logo you've created. The design is clean and simple but with a little edge, like the sidebar overlapping the black box. I would like to see more of the green amongst your content.

One concern I have is your lack of navigation. There should be at least links to an about, contact, and individual category pages. Give the users an excuse to explore your site! Then again, I did visit your blog and you seem to be doing fine without such a navigation. I do think a little snippet about you or the blog would be a good addition to the site!

This new design is a big change from your current one so I hope it isn't too much change for your readers. I wish you the best in your redesign!

Hi Corinne, thanks for your insightful review. Having category pages is a good idea - one that I will incorporate into the next draft. And I guess a short bio wouldn't hurt. Thanks again.

    Spacing!

Posted on Oct 30, 2009 at 7:00 AM

    Like the big logo :)

I think the main thing that would improve it is a lot of spacing, all feels a bit tight and claustrophobic. Get some big spaces inbetween columns and boxes and it'll all feel a lot nicer.

I'd also work on the typography a bit, main headings could do with being a little more stand-out.

    Hope that's helpful!

Good tip! I tend to be quite aware of the need for open space, which is apparently something I took for granted in this design. I'll be sure to space things apart more. And I've already tweaked my heading fonts, looking forward to showing you the updated draft.

    More padding

Posted on Oct 30, 2009 at 8:12 AM

Your text feels a bit tight in the design. I would loosen things up by adding some padding. The logo is far too large, I would reduce the size by 50% at least possibly more. The black stroke looks like a harsh drop shadow but then you also have a drop shadow on the right. Get rid of one or change the color of the black to something else.I like your colors and the basic layout. One could argue that you need a to add some interest to your post with pictures or some sort of text treatment. The right column ads are definitely screaming the loudest in this design, not sure if you want that or not. Good overall start, keep moving in the same direction.

Hi Nate, thanks - I've added more padding to the surrounding text. It never occurred to me that the black bar looked like a drop shadow - so I've taken your advice to tweak the color here.

I would try how this looks in 2d-style, without the lights and shadows.

    Ads a bit smaller

Posted on Nov 16, 2009 at 11:55 AM

I think the ad column fights with and overwhelms your own content copy. Could that column be a little smaller? Either than or ramp up the strength of your left column subtitles a little.
