    center alignment

Posted on Oct 24, 2009 at 11:02 PM

    1. it is usable, although the secondary navigation with the separating line is somehow a little far from the main navi
    2. Looks Chinese, the colors are not "food-colors" but I think in this case it is better to go for an oriental look
    3. I don't understand the question (sorry for my bad english..)
    4. I would try use a grid system rather than center alignment. Have you tried other kinds of backgrounds?

    the orange colour

Posted on Oct 25, 2009 at 9:29 AM

the orange colour used for links, titles, and borders is too bright/vibrant. thus, it does distract me when I look at the website. why not replacing it with a warmer/softer shade?

speaking of typography, don't use justify. it causes some weird and huge spaces between words. change the typeface to serif one. here are some examples:

    http://articles.sitepoint.com/article/eight-definitive-font-stacks

then increase the line-height, give more emphasis to the headings.

there are some more stuff to be mentioned, but i leave them to other fellows.

the bottom line is that, you have nice start there. with a few small changes, you will come up with something bright. this is what i see.

    good luck.

I tried a softer shade of the orange before and it becomes unreadable with the grey part of the background. Any suggestions on another color?

I'm with you on the justification of the text, I'm going to create new content for the text block in the footer before I fine tune the typography.

    Text Block attention, Unity

Posted on Oct 25, 2009 at 10:01 AM

    Hi Kevin,

I love the background, the dragon and how all the content scrolls when I scroll. I am wondering how you may be able to incorporate the hot pink lights that they have going on in their restaurant. Maybe the bar under Bistro Dragon and in the dragon logo somewhere?

The text block under "About Bistro Dragon", needs severe attention. Since you have chose not to left align it, all the text has space issues. Therefore leading to rivers of open space that flow through your block of text. This can be solved by kerning the space between words and then rewording as necessary to avoid hyphens. In the long run, it is a lot less burdensome just to chose left or right alignment use.

The second thing I noticed dealing with the type is that there is a big gap of space between the word "Bistro" and "Dragon" ( in your main heading) Maybe solve this by bringing in that space or placing that circular dragon logo right smack in the middle of those two words?

Because, the typeface choice has an R that has a leg that extends extra far. It pushes the letter next to it far away. Thus, creating awkward space and then it is placed by that A that creates extra space in itself. In the end we end up with a lot of space that draws attention away from the letters and traps the eye. So, maybe in this case you could overlap the letters a bit or slightly tuck the R's leg under the A?

Then, I would bring the space between the letters in a tad. The "S" to the "I" the "T" to the "S" and the "R" to the "T" (in the first heading words "Bistro")

Then, where "Sushi School" etc. is at, even though each of your headings are uniquely designed, I think it may bring a "Cleaner" look to this site if you made all those heading consistent to each other.

Last, I think you could get away with not using the Bistro Dragon logo for the second time at the bottom of the page. Just make "Bistro Dragon", fitting to the white typeface below it. Maybe at most make it the same green color. It is a bit to much having it twice on the page.

On your second presented page you use center alignment for your text which is inconsistent to your other alignments on the first page. Consistency in type will unify this site and make it feel like each page belongs to each. (Just like how the background is consistent.)

I agree with Miro about a grid system.

I love the background, logo and the bamboo look.

I actually thought about trying to use the restaurant interior as a design concept but I just don't have enough advanced layout experience to pull it off the right way.

The logo wasn't my design and is not something I need to focus on, but I agree with your comments.

I know where you're coming from about the 4 boxes but the thing is that the Sushi School and DragonFly are going to have their own separate branding (haven't gotten that far yet) and will eventually have their own subdomains.

Good point about the text alignment being consistent on all pages. I will change it.

About grids: Unfortunately I haven't learned how to use the grid system and probably won't have the time to in the near future.

Thank you Amy! You obviously gave my design a lot of time and attention to detail. I thank you for your input!

      Hi Kevin,

Since you really don't have much time to learn about grids; All it is, is like taking all your pages. Lining them up as you have them above and drawing a line all the way down from page one to the very last page. Then aligning items to that one line from page to page. It is up to you as the designer to divide the page into as many evenly spaced sections as you would like.

It just gives overall consistency and helps the pages feel that they belong together. Just like how you have applied the same colors from page to page (consistency). If you want to know more about it, try about.com (a great site).

The colors don't work well together

This is a nice design, but I think the turquoise doesn't work well with the background, and the bamboo frame makes the design look somewhat outdated.

Nothing. It does what it's supposed to do.

Posted on Oct 26, 2009 at 2:48 AM

It's a restaurant website. It's obviously not going to be the next big internet thing, nor is it supposed to be, so I gave it a 5 for purpose, and a 4 for originality/engagement. The typical human being that is searching for the site or is referred to it directly will find it easy to traverse.

    Too much going on

Posted on Oct 26, 2009 at 8:36 AM

I think you need to simplify this site on several levels. There are too many gradients, textures and alignments going on. The first concept is the best direction. i don't mind the layout of the large pic inside the bamboo and the column to the left. I would take down the size of the logo and bistro dragon text. Also, don't repeat the logo in the background.
