Make the grays and whites degrees of blacks.

Posted on Oct 16, 2009 at 9:19 PM

Dark blacks always brings out the color of art. If you're using Photoshop to design. I would create a duplicate file, flatten it and invert (CTRL+I) the design, but of course, keep the art out on another layer. The object is to make all the grays and whites various degrees of black (darkness). The colors are fine though. Try and see how that looks. The design is awesome, the layout and navigation. I would just make it darker.

too much on the right side

Posted on Oct 17, 2009 at 2:28 AM

    Very good design dude!

Just one thing, the 2 right hand side things, 'featured artist and upcoming talent' is getting too much unnecessary attention.

Try to slightly reduce their width to concentrate more attention on the main topics.

The main focus of the site is: 1) The artist community in India 2) The Indian artists abroad 3) The art dealer community abroad 4) The art dealer community in India 5) Foreign single time/infrequent buyers 6) Indian single time/infrequent buyers in that order..

Since it is more of a community based site, I've put community features above shop related features..

Thank you for the input though, I will consider it while making the final site.

    boxiness

Posted on Oct 17, 2009 at 2:29 AM

Have you tried to make the boxes less "boxy" by using parts of that pattern you have on your logo? Or... I really can not explain this well but the contrast between the logo and the straight boxes feels very strong now.

Hey Miro... I know what you mean.. while the logo is very rounded, the overall site is rather boxy.. lol...

I have to be honest.. the only reason I haven't used rounded corners throughout the site is because I'm lazy, lol... it will add another 2% time to development, because of browser issues etc.. and I've had bad experiences with rounded corners and javascript, so I decided to just drop them all together..

I can totally understand where you're coming from though.. 'tis too bad I'm a lazier developer than I am a designer ;)

      Thanks for the feedback!

    some color

Posted on Oct 19, 2009 at 4:09 AM

    Hey,

this looks very clean and organized. What I think it's missing is some color to bring it to life.

      Hey Mester,

The reason I haven't thrown in a lot of color except in the header is because maybe adding more color would make the site appealing to some but tacky to others.

I'd rather have all people mildly like the site, than some people like it, and some others not so much..

If it was a smaller site, I would throw a lot of images and colors into it...

Thanks for the review though, 'ppreciate it..

Well the use of color if done " correctly " can only bring positive feedback in my opinion. I'm not talking about filling it with color just key points that really makes this be alive and still keep the clean feel.

We are all afraid of using color that's because we don't know exactly what impact this will have.

      MEster.

    Nice Work

Posted on Oct 19, 2009 at 7:44 AM

I love the colorful design and the organized layout. I'm not sure that I like the tabbed boxes down below, but I would have to see them in action to be sure. I like the overall design though, good work!

The site should take a month, maybe more to develop though... Still working on the business development aspect .. and working out some kinks in the framework...

I personally feel good design is attained through a good balance of form and function.. which is why I've abstracted certain information into tabs. I believe having tabs is an good way to group related information. Like the first tabs are for finding art, the second tabs are for 'good' artists/art work.. etc..

I'm glad you liked the work.. and I appreciate the review :)

    Very nice!

This is a very nice design, the navigation is simple and everything works! And i like the use of brown.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Miika. I may change the position of some containers in the final version because my business development guy thinks I haven't given enough importance to the selling of art and way too much importance to the community aspect of the site , but I'm sticking to the same style though..

      Thanks for the feedback!

Overall great design, like the fonts.

    But the calendar looks huge.

    Background

Posted on Oct 17, 2009 at 12:27 PM

The left section background color with a drop shadow from the header add too much separation to the content below it. The large logo seems misplaced as well as the content not flowing together.

    right column space

Posted on Oct 16, 2009 at 10:35 PM

it's a nice looking website the only thing bothering me is the right side column after Upcoming Talent there is too much white space

      Hello Swarat,

The amount of bottom space in the right column will vary slightly according to the length of the content... I had to give it just a little breathing room...

Thank you for the input though!
