    Direction of movement

jQuery works nice, the image carousel - yes! But to keep it smple I would bring the "About the dudes" visible from the top too. Then you could keep the sexy text visible all the time.

Yeah, I was debating whether to keep that or not. I do like it coming from the bottom to keep the transitions fresh so I may play with reducing the text size and leaving the sexy part as the top of the about section.

    jumping

Posted on Oct 12, 2009 at 3:24 PM

You got a pretty nice jquery sliding effect there. It functions smoothly. However, jumping from the first slide to the last one (4th) and vice versa seems need work, in my humble opinion. It's due to the fact that I don't like to see all slides when I want to jump from one to four and vice versa.

    Well, that's just me.

    Great JQuery Box!

Posted on Oct 12, 2009 at 3:30 PM

Now that I know what to critique I'll go ahead and critique the JQuery :). I love the little box, the transitions are smooth and it's a great space to show your work. I'm not sure the fading of the the text box works though. I might just make the text box move left with the image. Good work on the jQuery though!

    the font is just blah...

Posted on Oct 12, 2009 at 3:56 PM

The text box is just killing me. If it were me I would try and integrate it into the background a bit more. Perhaps with a transparency or an overlay feature. The jQuery seems fine, fluid,...simple. Overall well done

Use Cufon with some cool fonts to spice up the site and make it look even better. Right now the font is a little dull and boring.

    inset boxes in slideshow/copywriting

Posted on Oct 13, 2009 at 11:40 AM

i think the copywriting could use some work, but Im thinking that this is probably a rough draft so far. . .

the inset boxes could use some style in the jquery slider. . . it's just lacking some engagement and proper use of typography. . .

im also not a big fan of "in addition. . . ." text beneath the slider. . . its not sexy and not well written. and remove the abbreviation - i understand your writing style is relaxed and informal, but using an abbreviation like that is super informal.

the menu could also use some work. . . and the interactivity with the jquery isnt my favorite. it just isnt used well and sometimes annoys me when I clicked on "about the dudes" and it just covers the content area with the images of your sites. . .

keep it going and keep us updated!

    Enjoy

Thanks for the response. I've heard a few things about typography and copywriting, working on that. You said covering up the images annoys you, would you rather it take you to another page? My thinking was if a user started filling out a form or reading through the about they can still see my work in the background.

Ya, typography and copywriting. You should research Hemmingway a bit and understand why his writing was able to make such an impact, and remember he was the one who stated for one page of masterpiece he had 99 pages of shit. so it's a process.

focus on your message to better articulate it in words - use some

The typography in the inset box on your images just needs work. The hierarchy isnt the best, the spacing isn't correct either. that header needs more space below it before the line, and the body copy needs more space above it and below the line. hope that didnt confuse you.

instead of bringng the user to another page, just have that new modal window stay where it formed from - below the content area/image. . . When I saw it start to form there, then move up I was surprised. . .

I really don't think it's too necessary to even use that technology there. I also wouldnt underestimate the intelligence of the user - something I am working on with my website redesign. so i feel you friend. but having the work behind the form/new modal window just really blocks and covers your work up. . .

keep it up! hopefully you can help with my redesign soon enough. . .

Awesome explanations, you've gone above and beyond. I'll post back soon.

Good luck with the redesign. I've been working on my personal portfolio since I've started this gig 5 years ago... it's a never ending pain.

what about no js (aka search agents)?

Posted on Oct 13, 2009 at 11:55 AM

this is rated as a review of the build, not the design, since it's posted as a link, not a comp.

with no js - there is no site, what about search agents? here's a classic example of a js nav interface from a couple years ago that also works without js: http://www.panic.com/coda/

also, seems like you have a typo on "nerds OR america" guessing you mean "for".

stick with LINK method for stylesheets.

form is nicely built (could get away with only one BR), nice to see labels!

not sure why you're only single-quoting attributes in html

i see that the content is all in one page, but the display:none;s are rendering it invisible to everything without js.

Working on the copy still. Thanks for that catch though. I haven't addressed the javascript/seo yet, but will repost when I get to that.

As far as the stylesheet linking, it's my understanding that 2 or less performs better when using import rather than link. Any thoughts on that?

Single quotes is b/c I code faster with them. It's not a huge mistake is it?

haven't heard about "2 or less" @import is faster meme.

i don't suppose single quotes is a mistake, i just never see it anymore. used to see it when folks wanted to stuff js on element attributes, but since we can attach for realsie now... don't know.

i've seen more success with building in the seo/accessibility in from the beginning vs. adding at the end. a la "progressive enhancement" (current strategy) vs. "graceful degradation" (previous approach).

also, not sure - does the idea behind conceptFeedback support builds? i get that the line is blurry, especially now-a-days; i wasn't expecting to see requests for crits of jQuery animations/transitions here.

that's why i was a bit quick snap.

The only reason for specifying the jQuery part of things is b/c people where just clicking on the image I uploaded and commenting on that, which is a bit too simple. I wanted to know how users interact with the site in general.

Make sense with the build for SEO first, then add js. Hmm... next time around I'll do it right. Hopefully this isn't too much of a pain.

    Reduce effects

Posted on Oct 13, 2009 at 4:31 PM

    Hi

The design's classic. It's nice but a little bit common. I think Jquery's a good alternative choice to flash, but in your case there's too much effects, and they are crossing over each other. You should think about a kill current anim script to avoid that.

text box background and sexy text typography

Posted on Oct 17, 2009 at 7:00 AM

Hi, I like the jquery fun :) Like I wrote before, I would change the white background in text box and the sexy text shouldn't be black in my opinion.
