nav/page state, connection with home page image

Posted on Oct 13, 2009 at 11:40 AM

how about a state indication on the navigation? this might help orient people who are maybe less savvy and potentially confused by the design/theme changes per page/section.

also, is that brushed image on the homepage clickable? is it a particular portfolio piece? i suspect it's an engaging image (though not particularly to me, but i love the brushed treatment), but i don't see that it relates to any of your existing work?

also, i'd throw in my vote for:

bumping the vertical blue badge at top to just outside left grid, making the logo (you're name) line up with left edge.

as far as the buttons or text links on network page - i'd say, loose them both, and make the entire region clickable with a nice subtle (or not so subtle :) hover state on the whole area (name, image, role, whole rectangle). also, maybe there's a way to make three columns work? seems silly to have multiple pages.

    this is excellent work!

Thanks for your review, very complete.

Actually, the image on the first page is a piece of my portfolio. It's a poster for a concert. And i was thinking of changing it sometimes, when i have something i like. But only quite personal work. ( not corporate )

For the blue badge i tried to do like you said ( and like other said ) but i'm not sure but i'm quite
embarrassed by the fact it goes out of my grid... i don't know..

Network page : For the moment i only chose those contacts for network. I will think about a three column design when i will have more i think.

Thanks again for your time and advices. :)

Definitely liked the last one better

I quite like what you've done with the current designs, and though the last design was overly clean and slightly generic, I would stick to that, 'cause you nailed that design.

Bottom line, This is very nice, that was nicer.

    love it

Posted on Oct 12, 2009 at 12:24 PM

great job! i love the new look!

why does the "HELLO, I AM" switch directions from the home page to the content pages? my pref would be the way you did it on the home page.

are all of the items in your portfolio movie clips?

I don't think you really need the Learn More buttons on the network page. Maybe just a text version rather than the button graphic.

    • Vincent
      Vincent commented:
Posted: on Oct 12, 2009 at 12:36 PM

Yes, thanks for the "hello i am" i changed it only on the home page and i forgot for the others.. oops

For my portfolio, i'd like all my items to be movie clips but unfortunatly, this is not the case. Only some of them are. I think i should find something else if there isn't a movie clip.

I had a doubt for the buttons, and you told it right, i think i'm gonna replace it by text link.

Thanks for taking time to give me this useful feedback.

I really like this, it's exceuted perefectly the colours are amazing, and the fonts work really well together...

My only one critique would be to get rid of the the "sticker" that says 'you like it or I pay you back' - never tell a client that...

    Great stuff Vincent

Not sure about the full-length photo...

Posted on Oct 12, 2009 at 12:05 PM

It's obvious you took time with the details on this concept (particularly with the contact form). Little things make all the difference. I really like the soft gradients, choice of colors, and your use of negative space. It's a very attractive, open design.

One thing I've never been partial to is full body photos. Perhaps the photo would be more appropriate on an 'about me' page, which doesn't have to be part of your main nav if you don't want to change that. I do like that you're not trying to look conventional though - the jeans and T make a clear distinction that you're a creative guy, not a corporate guy. That's a good thing. :)

Overall a big improvement from the first concept. Score!

so reading through I think you're getting a mixed bag, some people prefer the last one more but I have to admit that this one speaks more to me. I prefer a more real approach and this one seems to be more reflective on who you are and the work you can do rather than simply buying the work. I think the other site showed off you content a bit more but I like the more personalized look to this new one

Excellent, maybe want indicator of current page?

Posted on Oct 16, 2009 at 10:35 AM

I really enjoy this design, it has a very clean look, very open and contains quite a bit of personality.

I looked at the older design, and while it was a good design, it had that generic feel to it, while this new version gets far away from that feel.

I like how on the portfolio page, you've put quite a few pieces of work, without having it spread out, or looking squished and cluttered. In fact, this has made me feel like my own portfolio could use some work.

Really, the only thing that may be missing is some type of title or other indication of what page the user is on. And even then, I'm not sure that is really neccesary.

Anyways, I really have a hard time thinking of anything bad to say about your design, it's something I would expect to see in WebDesign Mag some day.

Ledge made on right side of second paragraph

Posted on Oct 18, 2009 at 11:43 PM

    Hi Vincent,

I love the bright pic selection for your front page. Your front page looks clean and interesting to me.

Just a few things that may make it look even more nice are:

Maybe Align the blue "Hello, I am" tab to the bottom of your last name?

If possible to reword your first paragraph so there is no need to see a hyphen.

Is there anyway to have your second paragraph so the right side of it doesn't have a big ledge? Maybe by pushing the words "or use" that's in the second line to the third?

At first, I thought it was odd that one paragraph started with a capital and the other didn't then I realized the comma after hello. Is there anyway to maybe treat the second paragraph in the same way? maybe by adding the word "if" in front of the oddly worded question "You need a designer?" I think you would solve two problems with one stone on that one.

I think the sticker takes away from the beauty of your site.

Lastly, the type labeling all your free quote boxes seems way to small for me (and I don't wear glasses). Especially by your submit button. I understand it appears smaller as I view it on the preview. So, even with that considered.

Overall, the site looks great and I wish I would have designed it. I like how you did your name in lowercase and your type choice.

    Careful of JS use...

Posted on Oct 15, 2009 at 3:48 AM

It's great having one page sites so you can use JS like crazy but there's always draw backs:

    • Typically with these types of sites there is a scroll bar visible which suggests scrolling. A user would be more likely to scroll down before using your navigation to jump down the page. This could go against the experience you're wanting to give.

    • What happens to users with a small screen? It looks like the typical 1024 "fold" will be somewhere around the guy's knee. So then you're definitely doing a combination of scrolling and using the JS menu. The 'click here for a free quote' is also a bit confusing on that basis.

    • Finally, what happens without JS disabled? I know it's only a few people, but still...

Aside from JS, on the network page what does any of the content here mean? It's a bunch of nice photos of people but what relation are they to you?

On the quote page I love the error styling. The page is clean enough to get away with using these dark styles, otherwise I'd suggest using a brighter redder colour. Basically it's good ;)

Are the drop down boxes going to be JS styled as well?

Finally, a small thing, but perhaps with the 'submit' button there could be something a bit more human with it. "Submit" could be more friendly, or perhaps a 'thank you!' bit of text could be next to the button?

Those criticisms aside the real winner of this design is the simplicity. I especially like the first page.

Thanks Tom, your feedback is very interesting. And i did ask thoses questions when i did my design.

yes i know for the fold ( Not so many people have it but it's ok for a 1024 height screen ). And i know this website won't suit for some browsers ( like ie6 because of png ) and screen sizes, ( like 1024 x 728 ) i assume consciously the fact that my website won't be at its best for some people. Anyway, if i would like to do so, i think i would have to do too many changes that would have kill my comp idea :) May be i'll force the full screen mode.

So much better - more engaging

Posted on Oct 15, 2009 at 6:21 PM

I think the homepage pops and drams me in right away.

All the pages need a purpose statement. Maybe a tagline under the tabs. Something about design.

That image on the homepage is killer!

The rest of the pages are super clean. Not sure what the network page is all about? Are those your clients?

    Portfolio page is great.

That's you right? on the homepage? I really like that!

Thanks, yes, it's a photo of me on the homepage. Network page is a page with all the persons i know who have a creative job or have development skills. Persons who can work with me on projects. I don't have enough clients to make a client pager for the moment.

May be you are right i could explain the content of the page with a tagline.

    Hi

Very different of the first, this version is better I like it more than the first, even if the first was very nice ! You name s more readable, the portfolio &network pages are slick and classy. The home page is so colorful and original. Why not put in your and a paintbrush, to suggest the visitor you've just paint the home illustration ? It will be craze!

    Bye

Thanks that's a very nice review. I'll think about the paintbrush this could be funny.

I really think this is an improvement from the last site. Only thing I might add is the difference between the pages might be a little confusing for some.

Thanks for your feedback. yes i know it's very different from page to page, but that was the idea : To have differents universes through the pages. Also to have more impressive transition when the page scroll down.

"Recognition, rather than recall" one of the heuristics must be followed! :-)
