Missing- A homepage for a cafe/bar like this should have it's contact info easily readable and prominent.
Missing- Copyright or site credits not included?
| New Idea | |
Too Simple?- I'd never thought I could say 'too simple' could be a bad thing but in this case it looks a bit more like lack of attention to detail.
The Details- Spend a little more time with the finer things down to the pixels. Things like 1px outlines, subtle gradients and contrasting lines placed next to each other can all give a greater sense of attention to detail. Keeping things simple is always a great approach, but with this design I think that, while the work with the photo's is important for the client that you should try to improve the work with Typography and Layout. Perhaps try using some transparent layers beneath certain elements so the text doesn't get lost. I believe the idea is great, but the draft could use a bit of improvement. I've attached an image of a similar site that I feel is better executed. Perhaps you can get some inspiration from that.
Andrew, thanks for the feedback.
Contact details on the homepage is something we are adding later, I just had to confirm with the client where they wanted them / what they actually wanted on there.
Copyright details are missing, you're right. Credit is there - "BAM Tactics".
The detail is supposed to be minimal, the client wanted me to emphasise the design of the bar, rather than a fancy website. I utilised the bar photography to really sell this.
Thank you again, great feedback!
Thanks for the Vote Emma, I'm happy to have found the site! I've been looking for someplace active like this to get feedback on my own designs, so I'll be happy to give back. All the best.

DiferentThe style of website is diferent, I liked.
DiferentBecause is diferent, some users can have some trouble to understand how it works. And users dont want to know how it works.
| Critical Problem | |
BackgroundUsing a image like that for background, can make your site little slow to open.
| New Idea | |
ContactYou should have a contact form, if you allready had, put a link on the menu.
Very different and unique, but you may have problems because of this, see my comments.
| Minor Problem | |
| You could have some sort of information here .. phone numbers? opening hours? Location? | |
| Serious Problem | |
| Probably not the most flattering picture you could find! | |
| Other | |
| Why not an actual Facebook icon which people are familiar with? | |
| Is this a bar or a restaurant or both? | |
I know you just want to keep a simple one page site, but you could put a little more detail on this one page and still give the users some information about the venue that they would find useful.
Looks good for what you're intending. Assuming you fix the obvious issues indicated by other reviewers (typography, address, menu description) my only problem is with the cropping of the inset shot. It took me several seconds to realise that it was intentional. At first, I thought it had been cut off and there was more to see on the full size image, but alas, no.
The woman is clearly communicating with someone. And you've cut them out of the picture! Problem is, the eye is drawn to the human element. As she's the only person identifiable in the image, she's the de facto focal point. The incomplete border and crop only serve to say: Something's Missing.
On the other hand, is what we're seeing what you intended? Or has it in fact been chopped off?
Hope this helps.
Hi Steve
Thanks for your feedback.
Bad cropping, you're right. Plus I realised I added the wrong domain, so other reviewers probably caught the bad end of the stick with the design and layout (cause they couldn't actually use it).
It's changed quite significantly since the client has provided me more information, it's a successful website now, everything is in a lightbox style page where people dont ever leave that homepage.
I invite you to see it live: http://thecrossingbondi.com.au
Thanks again Harleigh
Harleigh, I visited the site and found some issues. I'm viewing in FireFox4 and the lightbox is flashing each image twice before changing. It's not smooth. There's a huge ochre-coloured vacant space on many of them that looks weird too.
Just voted this up and noticed it was your first review. Wow. The links you added are great too. Hope you stick around to share some more stuff with us all.
