Color backgroundThe strong use of a background color in the new design takes away, at times, from the work you're presenting. I suggest using a similar color throughout -- so the viewer's attention focuses on what's important - your work!
| |
FlatlandThe new concept strikes me as very flat - and not digital at all. It reminds me of a print brochure - more so than a portfolio to promote the work of a digital professional. A modest and strategic use of motion graphics will make the design of your site pop.

| Positive Feature | |
Improvement: contrast between background and fonts used for navigation linksIn your newer design it's easier to see the navigation options.
Strong, upfront benefit statementIn your current site I like the fact that you fairly simply tell your potential clients what you do and what you offer. I'd carry over that idea into your new design.
| |
Contact infoI recommend placing your contact info in your footer and somewhere else on your home page. Why make your visitors hunt for the method to contact you?
| |
| New Idea | |
Too much emphasis on portfolio titlesI'd like to see more emphasis on the actual design - as opposed to the the title description of the project. Reducing the size of the screen shot for each site makes it difficult to read/ view clearly. I'd recommend considering to present your portfolio as case studies. First present the design - and then identify the features of the work, and how that tells your story as a designer. If functional design work is your forte, highlight how you delivered that for each client, etc.
While you've improved the color story in the new design, the current site is much more contemporary in its look and (bloglike) feel. I recommend that you try blending some of the concepts with the current site and the new design.

| 1 | This just looks like "D" in a stencil font

David,
Overall, the design is a significant design upgrade. It's now time to workout the strategy to engage the users.
Nice work!
| Minor Problem | |
logoThe logo concept is cool, however it looks just like D (maybe make the "I" pop out by using another color (like light blue)
| Serious Problem | |
spacingI liked the spacing of the top nav. of the older site better...that might be a bit too much but your new design is way too cramped up there!
| Positive Feature | |
examplesLove the layout examples, nice size and works with the fonts
| New Idea | |
blue boxWhen you build out the website some more, use the blue box with white top some more...it will give it some continuity.
Overall better improvement. Check out the notes - hope it helps!
Based on new design: http://www.ingledow.co.uk/id-new/index.php One of the best designs I have seen on here in a while as looks fresh, decent colour scheme, colours are bold and the menu stands out a mile off which is really good. My fav colour is baby blue so I think this is why I like this design so much.
Regards, Peter

| 1 | This is nothing important, but if you really want to bring out the image, then you must give it equivalent spacing. Bold images should always have equivalent spacing, especially when it is set out as an objective as a viewer's task. |

| 1 | Need's a slogan. One thing you should always know is that when you're giving a company a logo on their website, and the name doesn't have a "specific" or "relative" meaning, you should ALWAYS put a slogan. Visitors should be impressed, but most of all be aware of what they're looking at the second they enter a site. This is why the logo must have a slogan if the name doesn't suites it's industry. |
| 2 | You need an active state. This is to remind your visitor what page they're on. Now although there may be SOME people who forget what page their on, this still benefits them and the others as well. It makes them feel the acknowledgment about the fact that they're on a specific page. |
Overall this is a great web design with only a few flaws. So I won't say much of anything else, as there IS nothing else to say... Great job.
Next time, don't forget to incorporate these tips. I'd write them down if I were you - just in case you happen to forget hint hint.
Do you mean the background colour that's on the work shown in the banner?
