| Minor Problem on CURE.org Homepage | |
| 1 | I'd rather see the screen with her face than a generic "play button" -- I am about 1000 times more likely to interact with a human than I am to an object. |
| 2 | I found the scrolling annoying. I wish it were not animated, but static and that I could simply control it at my own speed. I also found it somewhat confusing ... I expected the highlight color to change on mouse-over, but one must click.
|
| 3 | "See the impact your support makes" is a more powerful statement than see "our" story. I would delete "Visit our media gallery and" and simply say "See how CURE brings hope and healing around the world." |
| 4 | Donate now button seems crammed in as an after-thought. I would make it larger and give it at least equal spacing. You could tighten up the spacing between blog and media, for example.
|
| 5 | I might suggest another "Donate" button here. |
| 6 | What are the benefits of signing up for your newsletter? Why should I?
|
| 7 | Why is this here?
|
| Minor Problem on CURE.org Footer | |
| 1 | you have your facebook icon here and up in the upper right corner. I'd say pick one place and call it done. |
| 2 | The CURE store seems like such a neglected stepchild. It couldn't be further away from the top of the page, could it? And how about a statement like "Buy cool stuff and support our mission."
|
| Minor Problem on CURE.org Donate | |
| 1 | Is there some way to recognize repeat visitors / donors so they don't have to enter their information again? It's great if you can have a "Welcome back Richard" line here along with a box that says "use my information" and "save my information for later" at the bottom.
|
| Serious Problem on CURE.org Homepage | |
| 1 | Help Now is two stops from Donate Now and this is a confusing juxtaposition. Perhaps "Other ways to help" would be better.
|
| Positive Feature on CURE.org Footer | |
| 1 | I like this enormous footer / site map / "everything you ever wanted to know about CURE in one place on every page."
|
| Positive Feature on CURE.org Donate | |
| 1 | I absolutely LOVE this donation page. It is an iconic example of how to do it right. You have an example of what a donation can do ($1000 changes a life); you reinforce that a gift of any amount has some impact; and you offer a monthly option. The form itself is clean, easy, and friendly. You have "give with confidence" on the left which further reinforces trust. And you provide space for comment below.
|
| New Idea on CURE.org Footer | |
| 1 | But I might suggest a bit of effort at organization. It's hard to find what you'd like me to do in this area, and so many things are competing for my eye's attention.
|
| New Idea on CURE.org Donate | |
| 1 | I would post your pie chart from the annual report that shows 90% of the money going directly to programs; 7% to fundraising, and 3% to overhead.
|
| 2 | I might consider putting your "every dollar is leveraged to $5" message here. People love matching gifts, people love knowing that their donation dollar can be stretched.
|
| 3 | I wouldn't say "Login to become a monthly supporter" I would say "Your small monthly donation adds up to powerful impact in a child's life" |
My first impression is how clean and attractive and "web 2.0" the site looks. I love the screen capture that shows a great big "thank you" message ... one of the things I advise NPOs is that they cannot thank their donors and supporters enough, so, my first reaction was "yay! they got that right.'
So I was a little disappointed when I went to the live site and saw that the thank you was part of a scrolling billboard and down at #3.
Further, the home page is a curious mix of too much and not enough. There's a lot going on here, but it seems to lack a bit of focus. I think the CURE blog is irrelevant on the home page, and would rather see news about the great work that CURE is doing. CURE also has a phenomenal report, with a great track record, and 90% of the money going directly to services. This puts you head and shoulders above many other charities competing for donor attention ... I would highlight this right on your home page. "See your money at work" or "See how CURE multiplies your donation 5x."
Overall, one of the comments I have for Joel (mostly after "great job!" and "terrific") is that you have to watch out for using "designer" speak and use common language for your audience. Things like "visit our media gallery" ... I know what a media gallery is, but why expect your donor to? "See photos, videos, and images of our work" is a more direct way to say that. And i wonder about having "media" as a top navigation menu option.
The "help now" page - which I would call "other ways to help" is an attractive piece of art, but I'm not so sure about the friendliness and usability. I found it distracting, and I would rather see more static information without having to navigate a moving menu and subsequently click again and again. I see you've done a great job of trying to organize it all, but I found it wearisome to have to keep clicking to get somewhere. I would rather see more choice densely packed on this main section page. It might not be as artistically appealing, but with your design skills I bet you could make it happen.
Great site. Inspiring mission. May you find joy every day in your work.
Richard -
Thanks for all of your input and also for your generous and kind remarks. You've raised some really great points for our team to address. Particularly I think you've made a great point about highlighting CURE's financial track record more on the homepage, and an interesting point about expanding the content of the landing pages.
Thanks again for the very thorough review - the best I've read so far.
PS - I do INDEED find joy every day in my work. ;-)
Really great input - thanks again Richard!!
great review Richard...

| 1 | Align this to the top of the logo, give it some breathing space
|
| 2 | If you align the main nav, then this can be made a lil bit bigger
|
| 3 | Align with the top of rss feed box |
| 4 | I would probably give the images the same treatment as the boxes, so that they look like they are printed on paper... consistency
|
| 5 | This is minor, but I can't help myself, move the video over to the left and equal up the padding here

| 1 | remove this space and move save over |
| 2 | Make the save button the same style as that of the back to top button on previous screen shot

| 3 | Alignment - I am stickler for alignment, make all the boxes align, it also helps for usability, a user tends to be able to tab quicker through fields when they are aligned
|
| 4 | move these

| 5 | down here, to remove unnecessary white space and shortening the page

Overall I think that Joel Glovier has done an amazing job, on the CURE website, my critiques are only to help him, as he has helped me on so many of my own projects.
Great work Joel, I am sure that you're client is very happy with the great work that you have done for them!
Aaran,
Thanks for the good thoughts and critical perspectives. Much appreciated!!!
Joel, there's nothing wrong here, it's a great design and I wish I had your vision, if anything I have learnt in this community is that it pays to be extremely diligent with alignment and padding, anything else is up to the user as designers/developers we are extremely picky, but NOT with our own stuff. You have done an amazing job here, and knowing you it will only get better!
nice review Aaran :)

| 1 | "healing changes everything" I am considering it as organization tag line and I think it would be best to keep it close to the logo
|
| 2 | wasted space which can be utilize by moving the heading changes everything close to the logo |
| 3 | ...comparing to the rest of elements designed nicely. I think blog should have some backdrop as the main USP section.
|
It's really a nice layout with great graphic and typo composition.
I think it would be best if there could be 2-3 line copy, educating users about the organization purpose.
Thanks, Haider
Thanks for your thoughtful input, Haider! I like your suggestions, and the short description addition makes a lot of sense.
Thanks Joel :)

| 1 | I would evenly align all the input fields on the page.
|
| 2 | add another label to street fields and rename as "street address line 1" and "street address line 2"
|
| 3 | possibly add a small blurb about their credit card info being secure
|
| Serious Problem | |
security warning when donate page loads.because there are secure and non-secure items on the donate page, a security warning pops up. This could be a problem because many users get paranoid about giving their credit card info. It's always best to make them feel as secure as possible.

Hello - I absolutely love the design of this site. It is so well done, and so well thought out.
A minor thing I noticed and wanted to point out was a small block of inline style on the home page beginning on line 436 (I'm a CSS freak, so it caught my eye).
I did find some issues on the Donate page, please see my notes.
Overall, like I said earlier, I really like the overall design of the site, web 2.0 is so "sexy".... LOL I also love the jQuery validations used on the donate page..
Thanks alot for your thoughtful input, Rebecca.
And thanks for noticing the inline styles! ;-P (j/k) Actually due to the dynamic nature of the site and how we're using Wordpress as a CMS, sometimes we have to use inline styles to avoid having to re-minify/gzip, etc just for a quick fix. (DISCLAIMER: honestly I NEVER DO THAT, but my boss - who is a back-end programmer - does it all the time; he seems to think sometimes efficiency is king over best-practices; PFSHHHHHH) :-)
Anyway, thanks again!!
side note: I viewed site on FF, IE8, Chrome and Safari - and it looks great on all! That's awesome! :-)

| 1 | this tagline is stealing attention from Donate button, so moving it under logo/ changing its color may help
|
| Minor Problem on CURE.org Footer | |
| 1 | maybe try increasing visibility of this element, i guess it is way important so it deserves to be clearly seen
|
| 2 | Try adding some description here... I was like what the hell? why are social icons used twice? (yeah I can see Share in facebook s icon... but you know user is reading site selectivly, so did I, even that I am reviewing your site and trying to focuse on all its details...) Have managed what is this after clicking on it... but other visitors wont do that...

This question came to me right after seeing it...
|
| 2 | same here... after adapting user to some standart you use this? why? |
Wow....
Cant get rid of it...
I do feel bad about my web design/developing skills now...
Check out my notes for few details...
Great job!

| 2 | Good Feature
|
I, myself work in an international NGO and have a good knowledge how the non-profit org website should work.
First I would like to appreciate it as a good design, but would like your attention for few things.
1- No Introduction (Who you are?) There is no introduction about your organization and campaign.
2- Recent Projects Yes, blog is there but there is no mention of recent projects on your homepage.
3- Blog Placement Blog either should be on sidebar or atleast not as the main content. Your main content should your "Work" OR "Projects".
4- How you can help? There should be few lines (maybe just 2 lines) that how you can help even other than monetary means. e.g. volunteers
Conclusion: Its a good site but could be great with small improvements.
Ejaz,
Thanks for your input. I think you've made a good point about the need for an introduction piece somewhere on the homepage. I will consider how to implement that.
As far as highlighting "recent projects" - that is the main job of the homepage slider. Did you visit the actual site? You'll notice we highlight our main appeals and any of the most important content in the primary slider.
But perhaps you have some thoughts on the purpose of the slider and that it should be constrained to other use??
Also, we aren't really a "Projects" type of organization or website. Since we are a nonprofit engaged in one primary work at all times (surgery and running hospitals) our main "project" - unlike an advertising agency - is always the same. So that is another reason why we are using the slider to highlight any featured stories, or appeals, versus something that says "Projects".
As far as adding "How you can help" info - we have a whole section in the primary navigation dedicated to that - the "Help Now" tab. Did you find that hard to notice? Or did you just feel that an additional piece of supporting content would be helpful on the homepage?
Thanks again for all of your input!!
Hi Joel, I have seen your website, it looks great.
Your slider is doing a great job, so no complain with that.
My concern is that the body area should be utilized more properly. Your homepage is the snapshot of your complete website. e.g. Help Now is indeed available in top navigation but there is nothing on Homepage. Yes, the additional piece of supporting content may help.
Any type of collective activity could be a project, no matter it is nursing, hospitals or something else.
You can style forms even in IE6 without javascript. Very basic example http://home.tiscali.nl/developerscorner/fdc-varia/styling-dropdown-boxes.htm
Although, you may have already been using jQuery, so its plugins are not bad option either.
Your comment about the homepage being a snapshot of the whole site really makes sense. I'll think more about how I can add content from around the rest of the site.
Thanks again Ejaz!!
You are welcome, I would be happy if it makes your site better.

bannerThis is a little hard to read. May want to consider using a different background or color font.
Social NetworkIf you moved the sign up a bit this maybe a good place to put social network icons like Facebook, Twiter, Etc.
Social Network IconsThese maybe a little to larger and pulling attention from the rest of the site.
Love the background and colors! The design really follows well and seems to lead your eye properly.
| Minor Problem | |
Your objectiveMore prominent "Donate Now" button
Hey Andrew,
Nice job on this. Although you mentioned the objective of this site in your summary above, I believe that getting donations would be a BIG part of the objective here, right?
If so, I would really consider making the "Donate Now" button of a more eye grabbing event on this page and put it more in the flight path of the eye. Generally heat maps show that the eye moves up to down starting at the upper left hand corner and then from left to right from the upper left hand corner. I would suggest put this button accordingly.
Make sense? Best wishes and great success.
Frank
Thanks for your input Frank.
BTW - did you visit the actual site? Or did you just view from the screenshot?
Just the screenshot
Check out the actual site when you get a chance and let me know if you still feel the same about the donate button on the actual site vs just the screenshot. Thx again!
I checked it out. I assume the "Help Now" greeny in the body of the rotating images is intended as the real action. I think you might do better if it was a contrasting color to green....maybe red or orange. This way it would be a glaringly actionable thing.
Nice work. Beautiful
| Minor Problem | |
second donationHi, I agree about that donation, these site normally aim to push that as well, consider testing brown as the button and hover to green, I think the brown might just stand out more. Then I feel even for my young (designer) eyes that the light brown "summary" text is too faint, someone with not fantastic eyes are going to struggle reading (and they are most likely to donate/want to donate). Again about readability, the bright green is again a little difficult to read - something closer to this ##83C828 or #289E1F might be easier to read (thinking mostly about the footer).

| 1 | nice large space for imagery...images rotate thru?

Think the designs are good but rather busy and confusing. Buttons are differently designed feel there should be more consistency.
